Club President’s Letter

To

Members and Guests

I would like to thank each and every member and guest of Old Hickory Lake Bowmen Club, Inc for supporting our range and operation this year.  2004 has gotten off to a great start.  The weather has cooperated with us and our members and guests made the winter tournament series of a lot of fun.  Big thanks goes out to Philip Ware for stockpiling enough firewood to keep us warm on those freezing days and to Judith Ravenscraft for running the sign-up even though she couldn’t feel her fingers.

We ushered in the spring with a great shoot and the weather was beautiful.  The work that our club members did clearing new shooting lanes over the summer and this winter is paying off.  We are able to use some of the “back side” of the range that hasn’t been used in a couple of years.  That area’s more like the terrain in Kinder and Myrtle Beach.

Looking at the results from those two Pro/Ams it looks like the hard work paid off.  Old Hickory Lake Bowmen Club Members either won or placed in the top 5 in almost all of the classes at Kinder.  Great job everyone and good shooting folks.  Young Tasha Milam showed off by winning 3rd Place in the Women’s Open Pro class in Kinder.  That’s mighty good shooting.

The spring and summer will be busy months for OHLBC.  We’ll have our ASA Qualifier on April 25.  Half of the targets will be set on the “front side” in the area that most resembles Roanoke and the other half will be set on the “back side” where it’s a little thicker, but we’ll find hills and gullies to shoot down, up and across.  This will be a good shoot to get ready for the VA Pro/Am and a challenge to your yardage judging skills.  In the words of Randy Webb, “you don’t have to set them long to set them hard”.

The general membership in attendance at the April General Membership Meeting discussed the need for purchasing new targets for the “walk-thru” part of the OHLBC Range.  Ideas presented were for buying more excelsior bales, cotton bales, rag bales or making compressed cardboard bales like those at Broken Arrow Archery Range.  The general feeling is that we should construct the compressed cardboard bales.  They may be more expensive and labor intensive to start with, but in the long run they’ll save us time, energy and money.  Plus, the bales are easy to maintain and last for many years.

Speaking of the practice area, Old Hickory Lake Bowmen Club maintains the range and practice area with club funds only.  These funds include membership fees and tournament revenue.  No outside agencies contribute to OHLBC.  We are a Not For Profit Corporation and as such all of the profits from our archery activities are returned to you in the form of quality archery tournaments and maintenance of the range complex.  We don’t charge a fee to the public for practicing on the range.  This is our contribution to the archery community.

Once again, if you or someone you know would like to take archery instruction, there are club members who are certified archery instructors.  Whether you want to work on your shooting form, need help and advice with your equipment, want to learn yardage judging techniques or plan to be a more highly skilled competitor, these Instructors can help you at very reasonable rates.  They are:

Don’t miss our ASA Qualifier on April 25th.  It’s a casual start so grab a few friends or the whole family and join us for a great time.  You don’t have to be an ASA member to compete in the Qualifiers.  Come on out to Old Hickory Lake Bowmen Club.  You can practice, compete or just fling a few for fun.  We’ll see you there.

Sincerely,

Dee Falks

President, OHLBC
