Excerpts from club news letter articles by students, student letters to magazine editors, and individual student letters and evaluations on 1st U.S. R/C Flight School....

Dave has almost unlimited patience. His manner and calm reactions to any flying situation is one of the keys to the success of the students. It was well worth the investment and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to fly properly.

Brad M.. Cleveland, OH

This has been one of the best investments I've made in years. You're very professional and structured classroom setting effectively complimented the stick time you individually tailored to the student. You have succeeded in establishing the foundation that every RC pilot needs in order to be successful.

I want to tell you that coming to the school was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've been upgrading my adult education, yet I never had an instructor who so clearly conveyed the lessons to the students as effectively as you. The way you built the training made it easy. Your true concern and support for how well I did gave me a confidence I still have today and you would be proud of how well I've applied your teaching.

Edward S.. Houston, TX

I am thrilled at the opportunity the 1STRCFS gave me to re-learn the proper way to fly. 2 years of bad instruction and the resulting 17 crashes are now way behind me. I now have the confidence that I am totally in control of my plane. The course totally exceeded my expectations, and I had high expectations. The course was the best $600 I have ever spent in the hobby, a mere pittance compared to all the crashes due to errors that I was committing.

I needed concentrated training. So, I decided to attend the 1st US R/C Flight School in Shawano, Wisconsin. Dave has an extraordinary amount of patience and he had the ability to keep calm during all of out student flying sessions. He never appeared ruffled or irritated at our repeated mistakes, I just couldn't believe this.

Al R.. Cheyenne, WY

It's official Dave. It all came together to allow me to Solo. What a rush! I even landed the plane on the runway in front of an audience of 3 other club members. The combination of concentrated training, emphasis on fundamentals, and your infinite patience has enabled me to be successful. Thanks.

Archie P.. Jacksonville, FL

After your course on my second flight, it was very windy. The best flyers had stopped flying and there I was with my Goldberg. When I brought it back down, under control, only a few feet in from me, you could tell their amazement. I walked away from the field with a great feeling of satisfaction that I am on my way to mastering this art of flying, and will be able to share it with my boys, and I will be able to teach them correctly.

Dan R.. Washington, DC

I can't thank you enough! We all were highly satisfied with your course and are still amazed at how you can tailor the instruction for each of us separately. I can't imagine that you could have made a more thorough or professional effort. My primary reason for coming to your school was to gain enough confidence so as to look forward to and enjoy flying, which goal was certainly achieved. I would highly recommend your course to anyone learning to fly and wanting to be a proficient pilot.

Ernest W.. Lake Forest, IL

I would once again like to thank you for the instruction. I learned a lot and had a blast. I've got 30 flights in to date with no repairs. Money well spent! I am missing the Wisconsin winds! Flew one day in approx. 20 MPH crosswinds since I've been back. A scant breeze after the course. I will highly recommend your school to any student.

Kevin K.. Hardin, IL

Dave Scott, a 1st rate instructor who made all of his commands in a clear level voice which were easy to understand. I have more confidence now and I feel I really got my money's worth.

Bob H.. Ontario, Canada

I can't say enough about your class and instruction. It greatly exceeded my expectations.

Mike W.. St. Louis, MO

I really enjoyed the course and your timely inputs. Thanks so much for your patience and professional approach.

Jack W.. Arlington Heights, IL

Your teaching methods and style are excellent, as proven by taking a novice, such as myself, and in one week of training, not only getting him to solo several times, but giving him the confidence that he goes off and "knows" that he can do it on his own.

Ralph M.. DCRC

I am in total confidence that anyone that goes to your school will receive the professionalism and friendliness of the "DAS" system, helping them to achieve solo status in the shortest possible time with confidence!

William S.. New England, CT

Dave believes there are two basic types of flyers. Most club flyers are "Reactors" who watch what the airplane is doing and react to deviations. By definition, they are slightly behind the airplane. For a "Reactor", improvement takes lots of practice and fuel for incremental improvements. I had been flying like this. On the other hand, "Controllers" anticipate the appropriate corrections to prevent the deviation before it occurs. They are thinking ahead of the airplane. An important part of being a "Controller" is identifying which corrections need to be made ahead of time. This is the heart of the DAS (David A. Scott) system in his manuals, and used at the flight school.

Dave, you gave 150% and you did get through to us. I have had 9 flights. Winds both days, 15 - 20 mph. Gusty. Last flight, engine quit, landed Ok. Miracle! Maybe we'll be ready for aerobatics next year.

John W.. "Gust Busters"

What a great time I had flying with you. It was truly one of those great memorable aviation experiences of my life. I can't get the grin off my face!

Capt. (United Airlines) Elwood W.. Dundee, IL

I can't thank you enough, I got what I came for, confidence, and the correct way to fly. Don't change a thing. Thanks again. My landings still need a little touch up work, but are improving. I think coming to Shawano and going through the school was one of my best investments in rc flying. A lot of guy's will spend a lot more on equipment, only to trash it, get disgusted, and leave the hobby, because they never had the knowledge you shared with us.

Bob B.. Greenfield, WI

As I participated in your program over 5 days, I honestly could not think of a single way to make your program better. You tailored a program to my specific needs, recognized the areas I needed work, helped me to confront my issues, and then directed me on to my next R/C adventure. I greatly exceeded what I thought I could possibly learn to do. Soloing the third day, doing barrel rolls, loops and Immalmanns on the fifth day was awesome!

Robert D.. San Diego, CA

My first approach was set up really well so I landed. I shut the engine down so I could let it sink in that a person really can learn to fly R/C in 5 day's! Your training program works as advertised and I wouldn't change a thing. (I'm actually quite thrilled about your program and very impressed with the amount of thought and work you have put into it!) I will return for your aerobatics course next year!

Bob T.. Fowlerville, MI

First I want to say, what a joy it was to be one of your students. I still can't stop telling people what a wonderful learning experience you have put together for the RC student.

Ed B.. Pewaukee, WI

I just wanted to thank you for the great week. I certainly learned a lot and reinforced some of the fledgling skills I had been working on. I think your approach is excellent and produces good results. I know I have a way to go but it was a great confidence builder to be able to take off, establish a pattern and land with no problems. I think I've already got a few people interested in the class. I look forward to coming back for the aerobatics class.

Chris L.. Fort Wayne, IN

Hi David - Thanks for a great week and for the excellent instruction. You are very well suited for instruction, very professional and very knowledgeable - your mastery of both the sport and the training are very evident in everything you do.

Glenn D.. Saukville, WI

I flew yesterday, but on take off a line of squalls came through creating turbulence. The plane performed all sorts of gyrations on its own at low altitude. Heard David's voice, neutralize and level wings! IT WORKS! Completed circuit and arrived safely. Thanks David, your system really works. I learned so much and continue to learn as I reread the manual which reinforces what you taught us.

Thomas H.. Ajax, ONT

I'm going to touch a bit of controversy by plugging the 1st R/C Flight School site because there seems to be a great deal of debate about whether people should have to pay for R/C instruction. As far as I'm concerned, if it gets more flyers in the sky and they have the cash to pay, then why should anyone care? Regardless, they have a good site and offer a step-by-step ground school there, which contains some excellent lesson plans and graphics that can be useful to any instructor or beginner. I dare you to go see them!

R/C Cyber Tour, Model Aviation Canada

I have heard nothing but the very best about you and your school. Looking forward and we will schedule early.

Don F. & John D.. Louisville, KY

You are a great instructor and the school you run is the best. I now have the confidence to take my plane out and fly by myself.

Eddie L.. Sheffield, MA

I can't say enough about your class and instruction. It exceeded all my expectations.

Mike W.. Little Elm, TX

Thank you for developing all the training aids and the school itself. Your schools has gotten me off the ground in the right way.

Paul M.. Plymoth, MN

The club examiner wanted me to do 3 take-offs and landings to receive my wings.....I did more than 20! Thanks for the great week in Wisconsin and for the skills and confidence to solo! I'm looking forward to the aerobatics class next summer!

Ron C.. Harrisonburg, VA

I had five flights with good landings my first time out after the School. Told myself, small bumps and do not hold in the aileron. Have been flying nice patterns, have been flying mainly right turns due to the wind directions. One fellow yesterday wanted to know how long I have been flying. I told him a week and he was kind of shocked at the ease of my flying. I told him I attended your school and he was impressed. I was a little afraid that I would forget everything, but Dave, it was automatic for me, very little thinking just action (not reaction). I am so excited to fly, each flight was a little better, smoother and automatic. Pencil me in for some aerobatics.

Michael P. Bloomfield, MI

Your training methods have stayed with me. I still laugh when I see all the complicated garbage out there about landing in a crosswind, etc..

Glenn D.. Saukville, WI

7/18. I am pleased to announce that after flight school I went to the field and flew four solo flights. The club instructors were amazed as to how I could do such landings. I confessed and let them in on our secret of the approach. I showed them the coupling that you use, and whilst a steady wind was across the field the plane flew with little deviation and the turns were smooth. The club "die-hards" were still not convinced until later that day when we ended up with about 20 mph winds and I took off and landed with no difficulty. They were amazed as this would have been deemed a "no-trainer day". I know it would have taken me a year of club instruction to have advanced to where I am. Your school is invaluable for struggling pilots-to-be, like myself, whose time is very important and solo flight is the ultimate goal.

7/20. Went out again yesterday and had a great day at the field. I now have 2 other novices using the same system and they improved immediately. They were over correcting the controls and with coupling now are able to see that holding in the stick is not the way to do it.

Tony G.. Jasper, AL

I really appreciated the opportunity to attend your class. We finished your class on a Friday, and the following Monday I was at the field FLYING!!!!! No help, just preflight, takeoff, fly in comfortable view, and beautiful landings!!!!! You are the best!!!!! One of the old hands at my field came over to say that I was flying beautifully!!!! Last week I took out my MidStar 40 and flew it flawlessly. Your calm demeanor, tremendous knowledge, and proven system, coupled with your great dedication and personality made flying easy and fun! I can't wait to come and see you next year, my skill have already improved exponentially, thanks to you!!!

Don F.. Louisville, KY

I just wanted to say thank you for your great instruction. I flew three solo flights one week after your school! I am so excited to finally have independence from the buddy box! Thanks to your instruction I am no longer afraid to fly!

Dale S.. AnnArbor, MI

Each time I have flown since the class, I have been able to improve because of the proper basic training. When I make a mistake, they have not been catastrophic thanks to now knowing what I did wrong, correcting properly, and how to perfect my technique.

Jim H.. Birnamwood, WI

I learned more after the first two flights at your school than I had in three years at my club.

Neil R.. Peterboroug, ONT

My flying continues to go very well. My landings are crisp or as some say "greased.' The takeoffs are steady and flights themselves steady and organized. All the result of your training at the Primary school. I am considering the Acrobatic school next year to improve my flying experience.

Jim K.. Lewiston, NY

It has really been fun flying out at the field and to listen to the remarks guys make about my flying. I keep remembering what you said you do to keep it interesting; trying to make it look real. You would not believe how many guys are amazed at how fast I have progressed and are now asking me if I want to fly their airplanes! What a terrific testament to your training!

Bob K.. Cedarburg, WI

I owe my RC flying skills to you and your progressive and insightful series of classes. I was very disenchanted with my club instructor's techniques and the progress I was making before I signed up for the primary flight course. I was very impressed with your approach to learning and learning to solo in only 3 days. The lessons I learned in the primary course stuck with me and I was able to solo back at my home field without no problems.

Chris L.. Fort Wayne, IN

I just got back from my first time out on the Somethin' Extra since the course. I think people were quite surprised. I had multiple people comment "Doc's been practicing" and even the "nice flying airplane"!! Worth it's weight in gold. It is refreshing to meet someone who knows what they are doing and even more importantly how to share their wisdom. Your attitude, patience, and example are to be commended. PS. It's amazing what can be accomplished by just flying in a straight line!!

Bela B.. Gates Mills, OH

I started Dave’s school not much more than a newly soloed pilot. At the end of the week I was able to fly a number of planes and perform the majority of aerobatics: Loops, Immelmanns, half and full Cuban 8’s, reverse Immelmanns and reverse 8’s, four and eight point Hesitation Rolls and more. I received not only the primary diploma but also the aerobatic diploma, usually only given after the second year of the school. Not bad for a guy that thought he couldn’t fly the week before. The other fellows in the class hadn’t really flown before and they both soloed on the third and forth day.

Dave H.. Medford, Oregon

Thanks for doing such a great job teaching me RC flying. You're a master at instructing!

Bill C.. Lenexa, KS

I often think about our sessions notwithstanding the dramatic impact on my flying. I now CONTROL what happens by not always reacting. I anticipate what is going to happen and put in the correct inputs and TRUST what will happen. I plan ahead for things that might happen and make adjustments before they occur or when they occur. I read something in your manual every night -- good stuff. I can tell you spent a lot of time writing and refining what you wrote.

Jim Procrass. Beverly Hills, CA

Like you predicted, the first home solos after completing the course were anticlimatic! I had absolutely no apprehension at all and flew the plane like you taught me. Like you said, losing an airplane is unacceptable. The check pilot found it difficult to believe that my total experience was one week and that I soloed in three days, but he said "you don't need my help at all."

Bill V.. Grand Rapids, MI

After a great week in Shawano, I flew six solo flights---no problems. It was extremely windy when I was finally able to get our chief flying instructor to the field. However, having high winds all week at your school proved to be advantageous as I achieved a total score of 87 out of a possible 100 and therefore received my wings.

Neil R.. Peterborough, ONT

Your training and the 1st US Flight School was the best thing I could have done. I was not comfortable with any of the basic maneuvers before getting to your school. Thanks to your training, I'm enjoying flying instead of trying to keep up with the plane. The really amazing thing was that it seemed so easy. On my return, all of the instructors were amazed at the progress I had made. I was surprised at how much fun it is when people start accepting you and helping. Even the "General" speaks to me every now and then. Thanks again for making flying a fun hobby.

Sam S.. Austin, TX

I am still sooooo thankful to have attended your primary flight school! Your teaching helped make flying enjoyable. I have purchased several of your manuals and I put in a good word for you whenever I can. I hope to attend sport aerobatic school this summer.

Dale S.. Ann Arbor, MI

Big day yesterday. Two guys in the OFC took me up for my wings test and I passed! I'm on my own, thanks to your splendid instruction. My wife thinks the 1st US RC Flight School was the best investment I ever made.

Doug C.. St. Agatha, ONT

I flew all day Friday after the course and greased 9 out of 11 landings. Saturday I flew with an old friend who as amazed at my improvement and overall confidence. I showed him a few things that you taught me and he improved immediately.

Jeff W.. Dallas, TX

I had told my mentor here that I was probably going to fly my plane this week. He offered to come out with me but I felt that I had to do it by myself. If he had taken it off and trimmed it out and then handed me the transmitter I would have missed the experience of making a successful maiden flight with an out of trim airplane. I couldn't have done this without the training you provided. I certainly wouldn't have even tried with a crosswind if I had not flown all week at the school in crosswinds.

Joe T.. Palm City, FL

The bottom line for any service is did you get your moneys worth and was it worth the time? The answer to both is definitely yes. I will recommend the school to new students. I would also say buying the flight book in advance was a great help. I think all beginners should study this book so they have an idea what they are trying to do when on the buddy box.

John O'Keefe. Springfield, IL

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful instructor you are. As more time passes I reflect on the super duper time I had in your class! You are a real pro.
