This is an example of our daily Circle Time routine:

1) OPENER

I call the kids to Circle Time Area (see wall in picture above) and we all sit down together.

We sing an opening/ welcome song together with hand motions, clapping, etc...

2) WEATHER

We sing a weather song and I ask my designated weather person (we rotate through the kids daily) to look out the window and tell us what the weather is like. They then place the arrow pointing to the appropriate weather on the chart. We often discuss how the weather is changing and discuss changes we need to make in what we wear when we go outdoors.

3) SEASON

We learn/ review what season we are in and what is happening with our weather lately, how it's changing and what season will come next.

4) DAY OF THE WEEK

We sing the Days of the Week song together and I ask if anyone can tell me what day of the week it is. We find that day on the calendar and which box is today's date.

5) DATE

I place the number on the calendar on today's date and ask if anyone can tell me the special number. We count up to that number together as I point to each number.

6) MONTH OF THE YEAR

We learn/ review the months of the year by singing the Months of the Year song as I point to the names of the month on a poster. We find our current month and put the date together... "Today is Tuesday, December 9th, 2008." We discuss any holidays or birthdays that are coming up in this month and which month will come next.

7) Shapes

We learn/ review the shape we are learning (1 shape per unit) and find objects in the room that are that shape.

We also sing a song to reinforce the facts about that shape.

8) Colors

We learn/ review the color we are learning (1 color per unit) and find objects in the room that are that color.

9) Numbers

We learn/ review the number name and count out that many objects, either on a wall poster or using manipulatives (2 numbers per unit).

10) Letters

We learn/ review the letter name, sound and some words that begin with that letter. (2 letters per unit). We sing a song about each letter to reinforce the letter name and sound(s). We sometimes learn/ review the letters in sign language as well.

 11) THEME ACTIVITIES

May include a story, creative movement activity, song with a puppet, flannel board story, finger play, etc…

On one particular day, for example, we read a story, did a finger play and enjoyed a creative movement activity.

12) CLOSING CIRCLE TIME

We sing a closing song together (usually holding hands in a circle).

13) LEARNING ACTIVITIES

I then instruct the kids about which activities we'll be doing next: Art, Science, Math, Writing, Music, Sensory, Discovery, Computer.

On a particular day, for example, we may enjoy the Art Center, Math Center and Discovery Center after Circle Time. This would conclude the "educational" portion of our day. However, the kids still enjoy lots of educational toys, puzzles and books throughout the rest of the day.
