From Farina News: Gene Cox, 50, Dies

Harold E. (Gene) Cox, 50, a lifetime resident of the Edgewood community, passed away at 9:50 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 1986, in Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Mr. Cox was born in LaClede Township, Fayette County, on January 30, 1936, a son of Ray and Dorothy (Ricketts) Cox. He was employed by the Department of Transportation for the State of Illinois as an equipment operator with almost 20 years of service. He was a member of the Edgewood Christian Church and had served for fire chief of the Edgewood Bi - County Fire Department for 20 years. He was one of the organizers of the Edgewood Bi - County Fire Protection District and also served as a volunteer with the Three Corners Ambulance Service. He married Gladys I. Yingst. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Harold William (Bill) Cox of Mattoon; three daughters, Mrs. Joie (Pauline) Sapp, Jr., of Mason, Mrs. Mike (Bonnie) Louder of Edgewood and Mrs. John (Pansy) Limes of Edgewood; mother, Dorothy Wilson of Edgewood; brothers, Kenneth (Tom) of rural Farina, Richard of Mason, John of Edgewood; sisters, Mrs. Mearl (Vera) Roedl of rural Mason, Joan Cox of Edgewood, Mrs. Mary Doedtman of Effingham and Mrs. Otis (Janet) Burgess of Edgewood; a stepsister, Mrs. Dean (Laquetta) Sapp of Edgewood; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, at the Christian Church in Edgewood. Burial will be in the Edgewood Cemetery. Pagel Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be given to Three Corners Ambulance Service or the Edgewood Christian Church.

Harold Cox served in the U.S. Army from August 13, 1957 to August 5,1959. His service number was FR 16 586 296, he achieved the rank of SP4 - E4. in Co. D 1st. Battle Group 9th. (Manchu) Inf.
