GUIDELINES FOR SHOOTING STEEL TARGETS

PURPOSE: To establish proper guidelines (along with established range safety rules) to allow members of the Pine Tree Rifle Club to shoot their own steel targets in a safe as possible manner.
RESPONSIBILITIES: It is the responsibility of all members of the Pine Tree Rifle Club to handle firearms and engage targets in a safe proper manner. Shooting steel is no exception, in fact its even more crucial to ensure that the guidelines outlined in this document are adherred to. Members that violate these guidelines will have their steel target privileges suspended until such time as the CRSO/Board of Directors can address the violation and make a determination.

GUIDELINES:
" Mandatory to wear eye protection that is shatter resistant, preferably with side guards.
" Mandatory to wear proper ear protection.
" Never shoot BBs or steel shot at steel targets.
" Never shoot on steel that is cratered, pitted or damaged in any way.
" Inspect all targets before using for damage, such as cratered or heavily pitted.
" It is highly recommended that shooters and observers wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, a cap
" and closed toed shoes when shooting at steel particularly on the outdoor 50-yard range.
" Never use ammunition that exceeds 3,000 feet per second at the muzzle on steel targets.
" Never use ammunition that travels below 750 feet per second at the muzzle on steel targets.
" RIFLES - Velocities over 3000 fps, pick a distance so bullet speed is BELOW 2850 fps at target.
" RIFLES - steel targets must be set up at the 100 yd and 200 yd markers ONLY
" PISTOLS - 10 yd MINIMUM on 50 yd outdoor range
" DO NOT use ammo with steel in or on it
" Steel targets shall be AR400, AR500 or AR550 grade steel at the thickness listed in Figure 1, for the caliber being used or as close to the caliber as possible. When in doubt, use a greater thickness.
" Mount on angle of 15 to 20 degrees by utilizing a mounting kit. ( Amazon and steel target suppliers )
" Targets should hang at a distance above the ground to ensure that a miss will hit the lower half of the berm / backstop behind the target. This is especially critical if the target is placed at 100yds.
" The use of overhead hanging device, targets shall use cord, old fire hose, conveyor belt type material, rubber straps or the like. We shall NOT use steel chain. as there is no controlling where rounds go if they are hit. Rubber straps and decommissioned firehose make good target hanging material.
