Ford AG was especially proud of the engineering of the space between the dashboard and the firewall. Every modern car contains a lot of electrical and mechanical components there, but in the Scorpio the designers strove to offer easy access for service. And if you've ever removed the dashpad and peered underneath, you know they succeeded pretty well.
Thing is, most of us are reluctant to tamper with the dashpad because it has a reputation for cracking, and we don't want to trigger a huge replacement cost (reportedly $672 from Ford). Rest easy: the dashpad is quite robust and simple to remove. Just carefully follow the directions in section 45-61 of the Scorpio shop manual, and then set the dashpad where you won't back over it during the test drive. (Oh, I'm sorry; I was thinking of someone else....)
