Dear Brother Knights and Sister Columbiettes,

How did it happen?  I showed up.  It has been little more than a year now since I joined the Knights of Columbus.  In that time I have sat through a number of degree ceremonies including my own 4th degree ceremony only two months ago now.  I show up to general and social meetings, go to baseball games, Vegas night, tend bar once in a while and play on a wiffle ball team that can’t be beat.  So how does an ordinary guy like me become the president of the 4065 in only a year?  Basically, I showed up.  At the last meeting of the 4065 I sat and listened as the general membership brainstormed new ways to make money to keep our building running and clean.  There were about 20 guys in the room.  The same 20 guys I see at all the meetings.  A suggestion went out that we elect an outside grounds committee to concentrate on just that, the outside grounds.  Everyone thought it was a good idea until we began to look for nominations.  “How about you James?  Would you like to do it Trevor?”  After each question came a surprising, at least to me, similar answer.  I can’t I am already head of the kitchen, or bar, or parties, or secretary, or outside guard, etc.  And hence my revelation.  I raised my hand (habits school teachers acquire I guess) and asked a very simple but obvious question.  Does everyone here already hold a position?  They did.  All but the newest gentlemen (2 guys) had held or were currently holding a position in either the general council, 4065 or upcoming 4th degree assembly.  Did you know that we have a few hundred members at our hall?  Sadly, I’ve only met about 60 of you in over a year.  And now look at me, President of the 4065.  So my first decree is to send out a plea.  I’m looking for a few good men.  I want to meet more members.  So here is the incentive; Wednesday night (check the calendar on the back of this newsletter for the dates) stop by around 7:30, we say the rosary together then right before our meeting, and after the meeting I’ll buy you a beer (I’m the bartender after the meetings).  I look forward to meeting you.  There are a lot of good things happening at the hall and we are making BIG plans for the future.  So pray for our council, our members and that someone other than me actually reads this message.

 See you Wednesday, Will.
