Hints On Bugling
- Bugling is not really difficult. After all there are only five
notes to learn. In fact most songs use just four notes. There are no sharps and
flats.
- The sound is made by buzzing the lips against the mouth piece.
You tighten your lips or loosen them to change the note. The bugle helps you jump
from one tone to the next. If you use a trumpet, any combination of valve positions
will work for all the songs. You don't have to move your fingers.
- The songs for the bugle are calls. They are played without words
but words can help you remember them. If you are in Boy Scouts of America you have
to learn these calls for a merit badge: Assembly, Call to Quarters, Church, Fatigue, Mess,
Drill, Fire, First Call, Officers, Recall, To the Colors, Retreat, Reveille, Swimming, and
Taps.
