The Therapy:
Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy is a therapeutic protocol for the relief and control of myofascial pain and dysfunction.
The goal of the treatment is the recovery from or a significant reduction in myofascial pain. The treatment goal is achieved through a systemized approach consisting of trigger point pressure release, location and correction of perpetuating factors, passive and active stretch techniques and a comprehensive therapeutic home program. Success can be measured subjectively by the level of pain reduction experienced by the patient and objectively through increased range of motion, strength, endurance, and other measures of improved function.

Introduction:
This is an advanced course in Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy, based on the work of Dr. Janet Travell and Dr. David Simons. This comprehensive program is designed for the experienced licensed health professional. Obtaining the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to treat myofascial pain and dysfunction gives you the expertise to assess and treat patients effectively. Students will learn the skills and the language necessary to become a member of an interdisciplinary pain treatment team. Confidence in your abilities will enable you to work with complicated pain disorders. As your foundation and understanding of postural distortions, perpetuating factors and referred pain patterns grows, so will your success. This program is committed to developing practitioners with specialized skills. A variety of teaching techniques will be used to accommodate individual learning styles.

This is the first program in our area that is approved by the National Association of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists (NAMTPT). The NAMTPT is an active organization that sets standards and guidelines for its members. Yearly conventions and learning opportunities are offered. Visit their web site at www. myofascial therapy.org to learn more. This test is administered through the Professional Testing Corporation, (www.ptcny.com).

Her career began in psychiatry and included the acute, chronic and clinical research divisions of mental health. A transition to medical-surgical nursing initiated her journey into the care of the physical body. Elaine’s extensive experience in the operating room gave her the opportunity to acquire a discerning understanding of human anatomy. In diverse health settings, for over 25 years, Elaine attained a dynamic, holistic understanding of people.

Following her own struggle with pain and successful treatment with Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy, she became fascinated with this therapeutic protocol. She commuted to Pittsburgh, PA where she attended The Academy For Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy . Elaine became Certified in Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy in 1996. Since then, she has continued to advance her study of myofascial pain and dysfunction through continuing education.

Elaine studied with Dr. Janet Travell, a pioneer in the field of trigger point therapy, in 1996. Further exploration in the areas of neuroanatomy, surface EMG, perpetuating factors, active myofascial release, pelvic stabilization techniques, myofascial meridians, trigger point injections, postural dysfunction and neuromuscular therapy constitutes a portion of what Elaine brings to the classroom. She is Certified in Orthopedic Massage and has completed Neuromucular Therapy training.

Elaine served on the Executive Board of The National Association of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy for five years and has been an active member for seven years. After serving as President of the Board of Directors for The Academy for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy, she now is on the advisory board. Her desire to teach grew from the tremendous need in our community for myofascial trigger point therapists. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and perceptions of the body. “The answers are in front of us if we know what questions to ask and where to look. I want to encourage others to challenge their minds and learn the skills they need to become confident and skilled therapists.”
