Peerless Style-44
A 44 note coin operated piano that was converted to play Pianolin rolls when Peerless was absorbed by some of their competitors. This instrument was found in 1957 by Harvey and Marion Roehl in Rhode Island. (See the arrow on the black & white picture) The photo here was actually taken at the Sanitaria Springs train station near Binghamton. These instruments were discovered in a storage building in Rhode Island where they had been purchased from the route operator for the money that was still in the coin boxes. Harvey shared the story of just what a disaster the place was ..."the machines were mixed in with all sorts of trash, there were even old mattresses thrown on top of them" ... a true indication of the period of time. The Roehls traded this machine in the early 60's to a collector in Pennsylvania who then sold it in the early 90's. This is when we acquired it and restored it. |
