Player-piano sales took a dramatic decline with the invention of the disc
phonograph. As an attempt to regain some of the market, Melville Clark
incorporated a phonograph in a player piano. The top of the spoolbox is
actually the horn of the phonograph. There were even records and music
rolls sold as a set that were intended to be played together.
