Pirate Etiquette

aka More Ways to get yer Crewmates Mad at Ye

Please obey the following Pirate Etiquette guidelines. Repeated violations of minor rules, or gross violation of a major one will result in planking, demotion or expulsion from the crew.

  • Don't make offensive remarks about a mate

  • Don't shout repeatedly

  • Don't repeatedly ask to be allowed to gun, nav, etc. If the officer in command says no once, then stop asking.

  • The YPP Charter states that ye must be 14+ to play, so ye better talk and act as if ye were at least that old.

  • Don't leave a ship during the sea battle, and avoid going afk (away from keyboard) during one. If ye be between battles, tell the commander ye need to leave, and then leave the ship before ye disconnect.

  • Don't leave a ship or go afk during the melee, unless ye be already knocked out.

  • Obey orders from the officer in charge of the vessel.

  • Too many questions or off-topic chit-chat while at sea distracts yer mates from doing their duties properly. Spending too much time reading and sending tells keeps ye from doing yer own duty properly as well.

  • When ye board a ship, say Ahoy! If the ship has bots on it (or only 4 pirates including yerself), and ye need to leave, then make sure the commanding officer knows ye be leaving so he can get a bot to replace ye.

  • Some officers don't like it if ye jump onto their ship without asking permission first. Tis best to request permission to board, unless the officer just posted a crew tell inviting people.

  • Keep the use of internet chatroom jargon and abbreviations to a minimum. Pirates don't say u, they say ye.

Officers Only:

  • If an officer be in command of a vessel and a second officer boards later, the first officer remains in command, with the following exceptions:
    • a Senior Officer or training officer will give orders if the officer in command is making serious mistakes,
    • the owner of the vessel can request the helm, and will get it at the next port if not sooner,
    • the commanding officer can request to be relieved by another specific officer,
    • any officer can take temporary command if the commanding officer appears to be afk or disconnected.

  • Do not try to promote a pirate to officer, or an officer to Senior Officer. Ask a Senior Officer to do it, and give a good explanation. Promoting cabin people to pirate be allowed, if they be subscribers.

  • Don't remove poe or cargo from a boat unless it belongs to ye. The crew share goes to the coffers fer restocking, not fer yer pocket money (unless ye be owner). Ye be allowed to take a duplicate map, if ye take the older map (but only if ye will be using it, not selling it). If ye have to borrow a map, make a note on the Officer Bulletin Board saying who took it and which one, and promising to return it. Be sure ye returns it later.

  • Don't leave a boat that doesn't belong to ye at a port with no ferry. Doing this means the owner can't sail his own ship having to buy a whisk potion (and if he's never been to that island it's even worse!). It's also not a good idea to leave it at a port that doesn't sell rum or shot, so it can't be restocked easily.

  • Don't leave cargo aboard a boat that doesn't belong to ye fer more than a few hours. This prevents the owner of the boat from using his own vessel.

  • Don't abandon a ship at sea if ye can possibly help it.

  • Always check the officer's bulletin board to see if ye have permission to borrow a boat, and then restock at least to the level stated there.

  • An officer should handle any station adequately and without complaint. He or she should offer choice of duty stations to less experienced members unless the ship be in trouble. An officer should endeavour to be more useful than a bot.
