Pastor's Reflection
Picture a bleary-eyed me and
20-something other members and friends who traveled to
Albany on May 1 to join the 1100 other New Yorkers at the
Equality and Justice Rally organized by Empire State Pride
Agenda. Picture three bus loads of Rochesterians arriving
at 4:45am at Village Gate, knowing that it would be after
9pm before they arrived home. Picture Open Arms MCC having
the largest contingent.
How thrilling for us to be a
part of this large rally in Albany! People from all over
the state joining together and then going in groups to their
Assembly members and Senators to bring our cause to their
attention.
The noon outdoor rally rattled
the windows of the Legislature as the huge crowd chanted
"What do we want? Marriage. When to we want it? Now. What
do we want? GENDA (Gender Equality Non-discrimination Act).
When do we want it? Now. What do we want? Dignity. When
do we want it? Now. There was a section in the front
reserved for clergy who were encouraged to wear religious
garb and to sit together. There are hundreds of New York
congregations who are presenting a view different from those
who have claimed the religious voice of discrimination.
We heard from Legislators who
were pioneers in coming out years before it was politically
safe to do so. We heard from new legislators, including
Danny O'Donnell, Rosie's brother. When she met him, our
dear Roza asked, "So, why is Rosie leaving The View?
Inquiring minds want to know. Danny suggested that Roza
take up that question with Rosie. We heard from Rev. Norman
Kansfield, the Reformed Church minister who officiated at
his daughter's marriage to her partner in Massachusetts. By
so doing, his clergy credentials were removed. He lost his
job as President of a Reformed Church seminary. His
credentials as a theologian were removed from him. He did
what was right and was punished for it. He is not crushed!
A Methodist seminary has hired him as "Senior Scholar in
Residence" to signal to the Methodist church that not all
Methodists are closed to God's LGBT children. I had the
pleasure of meeting Rev. Kansfield and his wife of 46 years.
For the first time, they have been invited to speak at a
Reformed Church college in Iowa.
Equality is not given. It is
taken. We can't wait for legislatures and politicians and
churches to do the right thing. We have to be there
speaking out.
Anne and Bess and Sherri and
Donna were our bus captains. They kept food, drink and
conversations going the whole time. There were frequent bus
chants of "Bess in a dress!!!!!" as we delighted in the
number of people from Open Arms going to the rally. We met
her challenge and now she has to pay her debt. COME TO
CHURCH THIS SUNDAY TO SEE BESS IN A DRESS!
Most of the news items and
videos had pictures or quotes from our Anne Tischer who has
mastered the art of the sound byte. Bess also appears in
some of the news videos, as does Paul and also Linda Utter.
So, yes, there are many
bleary-eyed Open Arms MCC folks this morning. For a good
reason. For many good reasons.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God,
It just makes me mad, all they wanted was to march..
To be proud, visible , peaceful queer people.
The police threaten to arrest them....violence was a clear
possibility.
A group belted eggs at them as well as words of insult.
The yolks dripped down her clergy stole as she and others
marched.
The voice of social justice even when silent, is heard.
This was how it was in Moldova.
They boarded the bus early with sleep still in their eyes.
The headed to the Capital, these visible, proud, peaceful
queer people.
There was no threat of violence or arrest.
The Governor himself was to welcome them.
Their voices of social justice were not silent, but strong
and proud.
This is how it was in Albany, New York.
God, I pray in thanksgiving for those who march for me.
I pray for non-violence, for those who's clergy robes
dripped with egg.
I pray for those who do social justice for all of Your
people.
I pray for Moldova in their silence and Albany with voice
strong and proud.
God, I know You walk with each of them in Your loving
Spirit. Amen

Pastor's Reflection
May 6 will forever
live in our church history as "Bess in a Dress"
Day. In a fabulous ensemble, including white dress,
veil, fake flower bouquet and fabulous white lacy
sneakers, Bess hid out in pastor's office until it
was time to precede him down the aisle during the
third praise song. The ripple of laughter and
applause started at the back and flowed forward.
Here is a picture of Bess and a fake newspaper
notice:

As a community, we laugh and pray
and eat together. We try to do good works and to
work together for equality. Bess was willing to go
all out to honor the pledge she made to dress in a
dress if 22 people went to Albany. She is a good
sport and a great credit to Open Arms.
We sometimes forget how good we
have it! We've been reading about and praying for
the work of our "missionaries" in Eastern Europe and
in Jamaica. Our church planters are working hard,
and sometimes in danger, to encourage our LGBT
sisters and brothers in countries that are still
often repressive. We sometimes forget how good we
have it. Right here in Rochester, there are
homeless teens who are struggling with orientation
and gender identity issues. Many are homeless
because their families threw them out forgetting, in
the process, to love them. There are LGBT children
in schools who are constantly victims of bullying.
There are always teens contemplating suicide because
they have come to believe what they have been told -
that they are unlovable. Many of our people
experience hardships in their lives no one knows
about. Many people in Rochester and the surrounding
areas live in the prison of the closet, or in
verbally and physically abusive relationships, or
are sexually abused children.
In the movie Field of Dreams,
we kept hearing the refrain "build it and they will
come." I want us to build a church together where
we never forget how blessed we are and how fortunate
we are. Let us never stop believing that our role
is to be the body of Christ in this community. Let
us never get complacent. Let us never think that
church is just a feel-good place.
Let us continue to pray together
and laugh together and eat together because by
building our community together, we are stronger
together to change this world - one person at a
time.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God,
I was reading
something by Amelia Barr,
"Time is a very precious
gift from God;
So precious that it
is only given to us moment by moment."
How quickly we want
time to pass sometimes...
I wish it was the
weekend...
I wish I was old
enough to drive...
I wish I was old
enough to retire...
Why is it so hard for
us to be in the moment?
Why are we either
looking at the past or wishing for the future?
God help each of us
to be in this moment now.
This moment is given
to us by You and then it's gone forever..
Let us celebrate and
dance and sing and give praise, if only for a
moment.
Let us know that each
moment holds Your love.
Let us remember that
life is indeed a precious gift from You. Amen-

Pastor's Reflection
Saturday is the
long-awaited work day at church. We will gather at
9 to clean and freshen inside and out. No matter
what level of skill or interest, there will be a job
for you. Terry Kelly has been making a list and
checking it twice and has a more-than-ample list of
chores that need to be done by people of all skill
levels. Martha has been working hard outside
getting ready for the landscaping jobs that will be
done on Saturday. There will be elbow grease, lots
of laughter, and, of course, food.
The result will be our
work for good stewardship - taking care of what God
has given us.
Debbie K. will be
preaching on Sunday. Her topic is "Yo, God, You
what me to do WHAT?!" The message will be, as
always, uplifting, and we can always count on Debbie
to make us laugh and think. During Sunday's
worship, Rev. Jim will offer a prayer and a
departure blessing for David.
Karen W. preached on
mothers last Sunday. A visitor told me that she is
so pleased to visit a church where women play an
equal role. Sometimes, we take that for granted.
A week from Sunday is
Pentecost - the celebration of the coming of the
Holy Spirit upon the church - the birthday of the
church. We have learned that when the Spirit comes,
things happen. These happenings always stretch us
because the Spirit of God never leaves us in our old
places but always leads us to new and not always
comfortable places. Our common journey of faith
often makes us uncomfortable but that discomfort and
the enlarging of our own spirits bring us and our
world to a better place.
I hope you never cease
giving God praise for the many blessings we
experience each day of our lives, as individuals and
as a community.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God,
why is it?
Why is it that when
I'm outside I truly feel Your Holy Spirit,
yet inside rooms and
hallways I often feel cold and lost?
Why is it when I hear
the morning dove sing I hear Your voice,
yet blasted with
traffic noise I can not hear myself or You?
Why is it when I look
up into the clear blue sky I see Your face,
yet have lost Your
being in other's faces?
Help me to feel You
in all the places of my life.
Help me to hear Your
voice through all the everyday noise.
Help me to see Your
face in others as well as myself.
These things I pray. Amen.

Pastor's Reflection
Thanks to all who came
for cleanup day at church last Saturday. I've never
seen the inside of the church so clean. The carpets
and windows are pristine! The south side of the
church has a new coat of paint and there are sore
feet from standing on ladders. The landscaping is
taking shape and will get better and better. There
were many hands making light work, ably guided by
Terry K and Martha K. And, of course, there was
food. Someone said that one of the things we do
best is eat together. Eating, while community is
being strengthened, is sacramental.
On Sunday, we had a
departure blessing and a gathering after church for
David E. It's always hard to send one of our own
forth to a new chapter of life. David is strongly
tied to us and will remain so, even in Georgia.
During worship, Deb K and Steve did a duet of
Traveling Light. That brought smiles and
tapping feet.
On June 2, we will
have another opportunity to gather as we come
together for a church retreat, led by Rev. Dr. Rick
Danielson. This is an opportunity for us to
strengthen our bonds and grow closer as a church
family. Please make this a priority. You won't
regret it. We will gather from 10 to 4. Please
sign up or send me an email if you are able to come.
We have been
experiencing transitions. Linda, Billy and David
have moved to other cities. Deacon Gene is
pursuing ministry options with UCC and has resigned
his diaconate after good and dedicated service and
will be fulfilling a seminary requirement by doing
student pastoring at a UCC church from August to
May. Steve will also be doing student pastoring at
a UCC church and then going to an MCC teaching
church in another city for a year of MCC internship
before ordination. Thanks to both Gene and Steve
for their constancy and generosity.
We are seeking another
musician to take us through this transition as a
church community.
Changes, changes,
changes. I don't know about you, but I don't like
changes of this magnitude. I don't want people to go
away. I don't want to lose Gene and Steve.
However, experience has shown us all along the way
that God will not leave us orphans. God will
provide. We will continue to pray as if everything
depends on God and will continue to work as if
everything depends on us. And we won't do it
alone. We'll continue on the path of building
community and continue the work of Christ on earth.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God, why have I grown afraid
to dream?
I know how to want for more, to yearn for power,
to desire money, lust for security, hunger for
relationships,
but when did I forget how to dream?
When did I lose the ability to stretch beyond
limits?
When did I start "playing it safe" and not risk
being playful?
When did I stop seeing unicorns and Tinkerbell?
When did I stop singing into a hairbrush in front of
the mirror?
When I deny my hopes and dreams I turn my focus to
the ground.
I carefully plan and calculate each step and action
I take.
In doing so, I miss the pictures in the clouds and
the double
rainbows that You place in the sky for me. God, help
me to
understand that to hope and dream is not ignoring
the
practical things of life but adding to the depth of
life itself. Amen

Pastor's Reflection
What is a retreat
anyway? For us it will be an opportunity to stop
with all the busy things we do as a church to spend
a day together, praying, reflecting on scripture,
playing, getting to know one another in a deeper
way. When in your busy life do you ever get a
chance to look inward instead of being distracted by
all the things that go on around you all the time?
That's what Saturday will be. Each one of us is a
part of the beautiful picture that Open Arms MCC
is. Saturday will be a time for us to see the
picture from a different perspective. Your presence
is needed.
If you can help with
food, please let Lu J or Donna J know as soon as you
can.
On another note.
Tomorrow morning, I will drive to the town of
Newfane to bury a man who was my patient. He had a
very troubled life. His mother introduced him to
alcohol when he was 10. She didn't like to drink
alone. When he was 14, he became involved with an
18 year old woman who became pregnant. He was in
prison for half of his life. In the midst of this,
he found God and became an ordained Pentecostal
minister and travelling preacher. He was not able
to sustain a sober life and lost himself and his
children to drugs. He never lost his love for God
and never stopped believing in God's love for him.
He also was never able to conquer his addictions. I
visited him every week or so since last October. We
had an interesting pastoral relationship and often
prayed and talked of the scriptures. He died alone
on Monday night. I was honored when his sister
asked me to guide them through prayers and
reflections at a graveside ceremony tomorrow. My
patient was such a troubled man and such a good soul
trapped in a life debased by many things. I'm glad
I knew him.
Please pray for the
repose of John's soul. And pray for all those men
and women, especially in the LGBT community, whose
lives have been so harmed by substance abuse.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God,
Why is it that we can't do everything we want to?
This Saturday I want to be at church for retreat,
but also in Florida for a baptism.
I want to build deeper relationships with my church
family.
I also want to hold my great nieces and nephew for
the first time.
I want to share in the spiritual journey of the
church.
I also want to see my great nephew baptize in Your
name.
I want to share in the fellowship of laughter and
prayer at Open Arms.
I also want to see my sister and her kids and their
kids.
I am sorry that I will be missing the church
retreat.
God, help me to keep my church family in prayer this
Saturday.
I pray that they are open to Your voice and personal
call.
I pray that they deepen their relationship with each
other and with You.
I pray that they laugh, sing, cry, and are silent
and rejoice throughout the day.
Yo God, please be with my church family this
Saturday- Amen
