Pastor's Reflection
This week we
tell our holiest story, of the passion and death and
resurrection of Jesus. It is a story that transforms us
– if we let it. It is a story of commitment, of
loyalty, of ultimate love and sacrifice. It is a story
that has the power to change the world.
As Jesus makes this journey
for us this week, the path of the via dolorosa,
we have a journey to take also. But it is an inward
journey. It is a journey to the place within us where
God dwells. It is a place that has often grown dusty
from disuse. Our journey this week is a journey of
renewal. Renewal of our consciousness of the
God-presence inside us. Renewal of our commitment to
hear the God-voice within us which gives us true
guidance. Renewal of our promises to ourselves to be
the persons we know we are destined to be.
In Jesus, God made
promises. This is our time to claim those promises.
This is our time to lay at the foot of the cross all the
burdens we have been carrying, all the sinfulness that
has separated us from God and from others. This is our
time to claim our new lives in the resurrection of
Jesus.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God, the sun peeks
through the edge of the trees as it awakens this cool
spring dawn. The hint of orange becomes larger and
larger as the sun raises to take its place in the
morning sky. It brings warmth, and life, and laughter
to the earth as birds and flowers dance in her glory.
This week we remember Your son, Jesus, and His steps
through life and death. His ministry awakened the hearts
and souls of so many and continues to do so each new
day.
His life still brings warmth, and life, and laughter to
the earth as all of Your creatures dance in Your glory.
God, let us remember the gift of Your Son this Easter
week. Let us remember that like the sun this morning, He
too rises to take His place next to You. The music
dances in my heart..."Because He lives I can face
tomorrow." Amen

MCC Laity Awards
Nomination:
The Laity of MCC presents at each General Conference
awards to the Laity. Laity are non-clergy in good
standing within the Fellowship who have done outstanding
ministry
This year Open Arms MCC has nominated the following
individuals.
Faithfulness Award:
I believe that if it were not for John W.’s
faithfulness to Open Arms MCC, over the past twenty-five
years plus, our doors would have closed. John is one of
the founding members of Open Arms. He helped name us and
continues to ensure that we do ministry with open arms.
He has served on the Board of Directors for many years.
He has been our bookkeeper as well as treasurer. John
has also been a strong financial supporter and holds
part of the note on our church mortgage. He rarely
misses a Sunday and has attended many General
Conferences as our lay delegate often covering his own
expenses. Even when he went in for heart surgery he was
concerned about who would do the bank drops and write
checks while he was out. He is a man of deep faith and
belief in the Church. He has been touched by God and
believes in giving back to God what God has given him.
John’s faithfulness is part of the foundation that is
Open Arms MCC. Please honor this man for his unselfish
ministry to Open Arms MCC and our Fellowship. Thank you

JoNee Shelton Lay Leadership Award, Social
Justice, Social Action
Bess W and Anne T jumped into the fire of social justice
and action without really knowing it or planning it.
They wanted to get married; so they applied for a
marriage license and were denied. They were the first
same sex couple to do so in the city of Rochester. Still
wanting to get married after being denied a license,
they held their wedding on a sunny spring day in April
2004, in a small park in downtown Rochester. That
morning they awoke finding their picture on the front
page of the local newspaper above the fold. All the
local TV stations and newspapers covered the wedding.
From that moment in time, their ministry for social
justice took hold. Bess & Anne partnered with another
couple in our church to develop a Social Justice team.
This team has partnered with the New York State Pride
Agenda for equal marriage. They offered training
sessions so that others could become ambassadors for
equal marriage. For the second year in a row they are
signing folks up to go to Albany for Lobby Day and speak
with the Governor and other government leaders. They
partnered with Monroe Community College offering panel
discussions. Bess worked, along with Anne’s support. to
have domestic partner benefits recognized at Monroe
Community College where she works. They organized an all
day “Gay History” fair at our church bringing our
community together. They have spoken before and met with
political leaders to champion the call for justice
within Rochester. Over the past three years these two
women have taken Open Arms MCC down the path of ministry
called social justice and action. They have taken our
mission statement, Empowering People:
Embracing the Journey: Changing the World:
and done just that. Please recognize and honor their
faith and hope through the JoNee Shelton Lay
Leadership Award for Social Justice, Social Action.
Thank You

Pastor's Reflection
It is no mistake that Easter comes in
springtime. As the feast of ultimate hope, it is
fitting that it happens amidst the world waking from a
long sleep under the snow and cold. Each year,
intellectually, we know spring will come again, but
while we're going through it, we feel that winter is
endless and we often get discouraged and even depressed
in the darkness and lack of sunshine. It's no surprise
that we lose our sense of hope when surrounded by
darkness.
Easter and the Resurrection remind
us that there IS hope in the darkness. Hope of new
life, of renewal, of connection with Spirit and with
others. There is also great hope that we will
rediscover ourselves and let the light of God shine
through us.
Holy Week was the most wonderful
and satisfying since I've been pastor. Steve, Lu, and
Gene prepared a wonderful Seder meal for Holy
Thursday. It was, all at the same time, faith-filled,
instructive and fun. For many attending, it was the
first time they ever tried gefilte fish. The evening
was filled with prayer and response as well as with
laughter.
Good Friday was a somber and
reflective service at Tawa Pano Unity Christian
Fellowship. We had a huge turnout of Open Arms People.
One of our people described the service as "unexpectedly
moving."
Easter Sunday was an incredible
service. The choir was better than ever before (and
they've been GOOD before). The joy in their faces set
the tone for the service. Our Steve has really come
into his own with our choir. The brunch after service
was, as usual, very complete and satisfying. Our thanks
go to Chef Karen Lasky. She had able assistance from
Katie. Sue W outdid herself with the countless elegant
desserts she brought. Jim and Paula joined us from
Buffalo and brought an excellent home-made dessert.
Holy Thursday and Good Friday were
better attended than any evening service in our history.
If you have not grabbed the hope
of what God has done and continues to do for us, today
is a good day to do it. If your hope has become
tarnished, today is a good day to polish it. For us
all, today is a good day to let God's love shine through
us in the certainty that God is with us and loves us
unrestrainedly.
And finally, a word of thanks to
Terry K, our worship coordinator, who is behind the
scenes each week to make sure that our weekly worship
goes smoothly with all the needed participants. Terry
serves quietly, not seeking praise, but give her a word
of thanks when you see her.

Mom's did her thing.
Zoey Rose just a little bundle of four pounds was born

Birth is such a mystery and miracle gift from You.
These three little one's bring hope and faith into a
world that truly needs it.
Thank You for that blessing.
Thank You indeed, for this is the season of birth and
rebirth.
This is the time when life emerges from winters deep
sleep.
This is the moment that Jesus once again brings us the
phenomenon of His life.
This season, this time, this moment, calls us to
reaffirm our faith...
Christ has died...
Christ has risen...
Christ will come again! - Amen.

Pastor's Reflection
We are a community of hope and joy. We
are a community in which God's presence is felt. We are a
community of flawed individuals seeking to overcome history
and shortcomings on our journey in God, to God, with God - a
journey with each other.
We let one another down sometimes; we
disappoint one another sometimes; we are upset or angry with
one another sometimes.
When we are taking Jesus' message to
heart, we recover from our failures, our disappointments,
our anger at one another and remember what we're all about.
We move forward together. We don't hold grudges against one
another. We model the community founded by Jesus and carry
on the work of the Christ. We can't impact the world if we
don't impact ourselves and our faith community.
If one had to be perfect before (s)he
could join a church, there would be no one in churches.
When God loves us as we are, we are called upon to do the
same for each other.
On another note: I've been concerned
about attendance. When we were at our old location, we were
averaging in the 50's on a regular Sunday. In our new
church, we've experienced a high of 92 people on our
Dedication Sunday. Starting during the cold cold days of
winter, we've rarely had a Sunday in the 60's. We don't
seem to be losing a lot of people so I'm at a loss to
understand why we're not on the grow. When I saw the
excitement on Easter Sunday, I knew that we are doing
something very right as a community. When I hear the choir
sing and experience their excitement, I know we are doing
something right as a community.
Can you help me understand our present
attendance situation? Please give me your ideas about
what's going on. Please be very frank with me if you know
something I need to know. Please feel free to send me ideas
that you think would enhance our community and worship life.
I am working on a worship survey that
you will be able to complete online in the near future. But
for now, please take a few minutes to share your ideas and
views with me. I need your help. Email me at
oamcc@frontiernet.net.
I thank you.

Deacon's Corner
Yo God...
To read the headline news is to be overcome by disbelief.
So many young individuals whose life's were taken in a split
moment of time. Students whose eager faces sat in
classrooms and dorms embracing college life.
Young men and women starting out on the path of adulthood.
Young women and men with such promise and life before them.
Daughters and sons, sisters and brothers, our future
generation of hope.
How can we not ask why God?
How can we not be angry, lost, and full of doubt?
God, be with each of us in this moment of loss and grief.
God, comfort and hold each parent and sister and brother in
their pain.
Remind us of what You told us in Isaiah 43:1,2
"When you go through deep waters and great trouble,
I will be with you.' Amen-

Pastor's Reflection
Last Wednesday night, I spoke
to a sociology class at Roberts Wesleyan about our
families. It was the fourth semester in a row that I had
been invited to lecture at this class at Roberts. There
were about 50 students in the class and the professor
advised me ahead of time that they were not good at class
participation. I did not find them so. We had good
discussion and good questions and for the first time in the
four visits, there was no quoting of the clobber texts to
condemn our families. One student asked several questions
about transgender issues and they seemed very interested in
the discussion. The professor was amazed at the level of
their participation. I look forward to next semester’s
class.
Paul and I appreciated your
prayers around my bone scan last Thursday. The results
showed no evidence of cancer in my bones and also showed no
additional “degenerative changes” in my spine and joints.
So both of those are good results. Thank you for your
prayers.
We weren't in church Sunday
because we paid a visit to friends and family in Boston. On
Friday night we visited with our friend, Doug, who describes
himself as a member of Open Arms MCC in diaspora. He
is far away but looks forward to hearing our weekly church
news. Our friend, Donna, also in Massachusetts, also feels
like Open Arms is her church. Doug was here for my
installation as pastor in 2004. He also was with me as a
missionary in Baghdad many years ago. We visited another
former Jesuit friend, Jack, and his spouse and adopted son,
Christopher. Christopher just turned 7 and is a wonderfully
sociable and clearly loved child. Another plus was that one
of Christopher’s dads runs a sweet shop and café – which is
where we met, of course.
On Saturday, we spent the
whole afternoon with Lillian, a dear friend of mine who is
in her 80’s. She had spent the whole previous week
preparing an incredible Lebanese meal for our visit. Her
niece told me that she never really gets excited about
people visiting but was very excited about our visit. She
and her sister, Sarah, who died last year, met Paul for the
first time in 2002. There has never been a card or phone
call since where they haven't asked after Paul. We love her
and had so much fun. We ate till it hurt and then took a
walk and returned to a table completely full of dessert.
And, of course, there was a care package to take home.
Sunday morning, we had
breakfast with Doug and his wife and then went to the Public
Gardens to ride the Swan Boats and feed the squirrels and
pigeons.
We packed a lot into a few
days and were pleasantly tired when we got home Sunday
night.
And, we carried you with us.
When, as a church, we form community, rooted in God. Our
connections aren't just for Sunday mornings but are for all
the hours of all the days. Even though we were 400 miles
from home, we felt our connections with you. Thank you for
being our family and for carrying us in your heart.
Rev. Jim
Deacon's Corner
Yo God,
Sometimes I feel like a slave to the cost of living.
Existing has become more and more expensive.
Gas at almost $3.00 a gallon, rent, food...continue to go up
and up.
Credit card offers come in the mail daily.
Living sometimes seems as if it is only for the rich and
wealthy.
Perhaps I have lost track of the difference between need and
want.
Everything becomes a need, and a must have, somehow if I
don't
get what I "need", it lowers my feeling of worth and
self-esteem.
God, remind me what is important: family, friends, and
relationships.
Remind me that this place is key to my well being.
Remind me the difference between need and want.
Remind me that You are an essential need in my life as is my
church family.
Let me not forget these things....Amen
