The Navajo Nation lies within three major basins: the Upper Colorado River Basin, the Lower Colorado River Basin, and the Rio Grande Basin. These basins are formed by converging smaller river tributaries and their  espective watersheds. The Upper Colorado River Basin includes the mainstem Colorado River and the San Juan Rivers. The Lower Colorado River Basin includes the Little Colorado and Zuni Rivers. The Rio Grande Basin includes the Rio San Jose.
