OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to….

  1. Cooperatively research skeleton web sites from the teachers home page, as well as viewing the Louvre software for examples of still-life artwork.
  2. Participate in a group discussion based around the art works found in the Louvre CD-ROM, and incorporating the Elements/Principles of Art.
  3. Develop a composition using a skeleton as the still-life object working in the art medium pastels.

CONTENT:

  1. Students accessing the web sites provided will enhance further understanding of the human skeleton as well as working along with the science curriculum.
  2. Cooperatively tour the Louvre Museum for still-life paintings that will assist the students knowledge in developing their own still-life composition.
  3. Students designs will be sketched first, then developed into a final composition using the medium pastels.

MATERIALS:

Art Technology

Pastels, 18X24 Black Paper, Pencils 8 Computers, Internet access,

Newsprint paper, Fixative, Smocks PowerPoint software, Louvre

Books, Completed Example, CD-ROM,Digital Camera,

Written Instructions Floppy Disks

PROCEDURES:

  1. Do Now (5min.)
  1. Begin each class with sketching or writing about art. The artwork should be based around the theme of the unit/lesson.
  1. Demonstration (7min.)
  1. Teacher should give a brief demonstration of the activity for the day, as well as what is to be accomplished for the remanding time in the classroom. Written instructions should be posted for students to easily accomplish tasks.

 

 

  1. Activities (30min.)
  1. Students will begin the lesson first by accessing the teachers home page to research various web sites on human skeletons, and sketch a picture the group likes to become familiar with the skeleton, and the many bones it has.
  2. Following the research on the web sites students will then cooperatively again view the Louvre CD-ROM. Students will be asked to follow a path where they can view many different types of still-life paintings, and pastel drawings. Along with working on the computers students will also gain more understanding in their Science class.
  3. Students will then begin sketching from a life size plastic skeleton to create four thumb- nail sketches. Students should focus in on the skeleton its self instead of drawing the whole thing.
  4. Selecting one thumbnail sketch students will then redraw the sketch on 18X24 black paper. After the students complete the redrawing process they will then add color to the composition using pastels.

ASSESSMENT:

  1. Students understanding of the human skeleton will be assessed through the students pastel drawing.
  2. Completion of rubric on the finished project.
  3. Written critical/analysis of students own work.

EXTENSIONS:

  1. Digital photograph taken of artwork to incorporate into studetns art portfolio created in PowerPoint.
  2. Study animal skeletons and draw them in a crooked manor to fit the skeleton all on one size piece of paper using markers.
