Solution to Problem 19: "Name Dropping"

nameA.bmp (76950 bytes) F1-5 is either ASSAD or SNEAD.  In either case, F5 is D.  F-J5 is either DONNE or DUPRE.  If it were DUPRE, then there would be no possible word from H1-5.  Therefore, it is DONNE.  F5-9 can only be OAKES.
nameB.bmp (76950 bytes) I5-9 is either NEHRU or NIOBE, so I6 is either E or I.  F-J6 is either GATES or SATIE.  In either event, H6 is T.  H6-10 is either TRIBE or TWAIN.  If it were TRIBE, then there could be no word for F-J8, so H6-10 is TWAIN.   F-J8 is either HEARN or LEARY, so I8 is R.  Therefore, I5-9 is NEHRU and F-J6 is GATES.  F6-10 can only be GILES, so F-J8 is LEARY.  J6-10 can only be STYNE and F-J10 can only be SYNGE.

B-F7 can only be MARTI.

nameC.bmp (76950 bytes) H1-5 is either KLEIN or LENIN.  It cannot be KLEIN, because then no word would fit at F-J1, so it is LENIN.  F-J1 can only be SILLS, so F1-5 is SNEAD.   F-J3 can only be ERNST, J1-5 is SATIE, E-I2 is UNSER, and E1-5 is DUPRE.
nameD.bmp (76950 bytes) A-E1 is either ASSAD or HEROD.  It cannot be ASSAD, because then no word could fit at A1-5, so it is HEROD.  A1-5 is HEARN, C1-5 is RUSSO, A-E5 is NIOBE, B2-6 is HENIE, D2-6 is COSBY.

A-E6 is PEPYS, C6-10 is PAINE, A6-10 is POTOK, E6-10 is STERN, A-E8 is TRIBE, A-E10 is KLEIN, and B-F9 is ANDRE

nameE.bmp (76950 bytes) The missing name is ASSAD.

Comments: I think this puzzle took me about ten minutes to solve in the contest.   It went just about the way that I described, except that I wrote two (or more) letters in many more squares than I described here.  I'm usually inclined to try speed Kriss Krosses, because the author can only make it challenging for so long before you break through and get the rest of it easily.
