About Us ...
The Western Monroe Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) private exempt foundation, was organized by a handful of dedicated people in 1965. The Morgan-Manning House became its headquarters. The Society's main purpose is to preserve the House and the cultural and historical heritage of this community. Today the society has grown to over 400 members.
The Society sponsors a variety of programs and activities for the community. They Include
The Society hosts meetings for a number of local organizations. The Garden, Quilters, Spinners, Antiques, Preservation, and History Clubs all meet on a regular basis at the House.
The Society takes great pride in cooperating with area schools to help enrich their local history curriculum. School children visit the House and its volunteers introduce them to an important part of the history of the village and the Victorian Era. In addition, we sponsor an always popular ANTIQUES CLASS for six weeks with Mr. Price Prazar, a certified antiques appraiser. The next class will be conducted from September 10 through October 15, 2009.
The extensive collection of local history records at the Morgan-Manning House is available for research, by appointment. Tours of the Morgan-Manning House are free to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted. To schedule a tour, please call (585) 637-3645.
Books by Historian Eunice Chesnut, as well as other commemorative items may be purchased from the Society, with proceeds going to support the preservation of the house and grounds. In addition, the Morgan Manning Quilters conduct a quilt raffle every two years, featuring two hand-made quilts and a handmade doll, with procedes supporting quilting activities as well as the general Historic Society budget.
