Here are some common dog training terms and their definitions.


Boarding - Having a kennel take care of your dog(s) while you are away from home.

Flushing - Putting a game bird in the air.

Fully Trained Dog - A dog that has had obedience training and is also trained in hunting and retrieving.

Obedience Training - Training in basic commands. ie. sit, stay, heel.

Partially Trained Dog - See Starter Dog.

Pointing - Finding and holding a game bird by pointing.

Puppy - A young dog.

Retrieving - Bringing back downed game animals.

Starter Dog - A dog that has been through obedience training, retriever training, and some hunting training.

Weening - Taking a puppy (at about 4 weeks old) off his mother and on to hard puppy food.

Whelping - Female dog giving birth to puppies.
