Education

Here is a listing of university departments in Western New York that provide education on human capabilities and limitations, be they physical or psychological. These programs also provide coursework on methods of measuring and characterizing these capabilities and limitations. While each of these departments provide education which is relevant to Human Factors and Ergonomics, not all departments provide degrees in this field.

Members of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences study and teach how we see and hear, move, learn and remember, reason, produce and understand spoken and signed languages, and how these remarkable capabilities depend upon the workings of the brain. We also study how these capabilities develop during infancy and childhood, and how the brain matures and becomes organized to perform complex behavior.

Cognitive Psychology at the University of Rochester
This program fosters a unique interdisciplinary atmosphere where students move freely among various departments. Over 40 faculty are engaged in variety of ground-breaking research programs with major strengths in language and vision. There is no formal department of Cognitive Science, rather it is comprised of members of the departments of Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy and Brain and Cognitive Sciences.

Design and Environmental Analysis at Cornell
Cornell University's Department of Design and Environmental Analysis offers a Human Factors and Ergonomics Program that focuses on ways to improve comfort, performance and health through the ergonomic design of products and environments.

Graduate Program of Ergonomics and Biomechanics (ERBI), New York Univeristy
The multidisciplinary Program of Ergonomics and Biomechanics of New York University offers both Master's and Doctor of Philosophy degrees to those qualified students who seek an advanced understanding of the theory and application of ergonomics and biomechanics disciplines. This unique program is conducted by the Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center (OIOC) of the Hospital for Joint Diseases, Mt. Sinai NYU Health. The OIOC is an internationally recognized clinical, research, and educational center that specializes in the prevention and treatment of occupational musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Students with backgrounds in allied health, medicine, occupational nursing and medicine, orthopaedic surgery, epidemiology, psychology, basic sciences, basic medical sciences, and engineering are attracted to the program. Students in the program are trained to apply immediate practical solutions to health-related problems and to develop methods for the prevention of musculoskeletal diseases and work-related injuries. The primary objective of the program is to prepare the student for an academic and research career. The curriculum is designed to be a well-balanced blend of theoretical, practical, and research skills coursework. The multidisciplinary faculty with backgrounds in physical sciences, biomechanics, ergonomics, human factors, psychology, epidemiology, and engineering support this curriculum.
