This original quilt was designed, pieced and quilted by Ed Gucker. It is based on shapes that arise in the mathematical study of chaotic motion and fractal geometry. The title, "Self-similarity", refers to a characteristic of many fractal shapes: namely, that they look the same under magnification.

The quilting was accomplished using a variety of techniques. The triangular corners were produced by marking a 1/4 inch grid on the fabric with a water-soluble pen, and then stitching the pattern using a straight-edged ruler.

The nested circles along the edges were made using the Circle Lord® attachment. The sequence of ten figures surrounding the center section were done by generating the shapes on a computer, tracing the pattern onto the fabric and then stitching along the traced lines with the help of curved rulers.

Finally, the central section (please refer to the detail image below) was done by generating the image on the computer, then attaching the printed image to the fabric with a basting spray and stitching through the paper with metallic thread. The paper was then removed with tweezers. Needless to say, the process was very time-consuming and not very cost-effective!
