Rikard’s Mill Historical Park -Between Monroeville and Camden on Hwy. 265

$5 students, teachers & chaperones

This is a unique opportunity for students and adults alike to see demonstrations of skills and crafts from the past, such as blacksmithing, mules grinding sugar cane, and corn milling at the 1845 water-powered grist mill.  There will be candle making, cooking demonstrations, basket weaving, nature hikes and more. Nov. 7, 2009 Cane Syrup Making Day - in Beatrice

Rikard’s Mill Historical Park- Between Monroeville and Camden on Hwy. 265—

$5 adults, $3 seniors & children

Join us for biscuits and syrup and watch a 19th-century mule-driven cane mill and furnace make cane syrup as in olden days. BBQ and Monroe Sausage will be available for lunch. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, contact Dennis Mixon at (251) 575-7433.

Nov. 13 & 14 - 2nd Annual Fruitcake Festival with "A Christmas Memory" performance at 7 p.m. in Old Courtroom
 
2nd Annual Fruitcake Festival:  Friday 8 am-10:30 pm.  The day will begin with sales of homemade fruitcakes by the ladies of Monroeville, packaged in specially made Capote tins as well as local pecans.   Monroeville also hosts a local holiday market on the square with vendors bringing their wares to the "Mockingbird Market" on Friday and Saturday.  
 
The day concludes with a presentation of  "A Christmas Memory" at the Old Courthouse Museum at 7 pm by storyteller Dolores Hydock.  Seating is limited.  Call now for reservations.  251-575-7433.  Following the presentation, we'll have a fabulous holiday fruitcake reception and silent auction of fruitcakes, with a select number made by regional chefs paired with rare editions of "A Christmas Memory."
 
Tickets to the reading and party are $25 and may be purchased by phone or email. 
 
Saturday 10 am- 2 pm, fruitcake, pecan and local candy sales at the Old Courthouse Museum.

The annual reopening of Rikard’s Mill features the gristmill turning out meal and grits again as it has done since Jake Rikard first established a gristmill on Flat Creek in 1845. A Day In Maycomb

Admission: $10. A day of immersion into the historical surroundings associated with the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Guests will have the opportunity for a guided tour to see the exhibits in the Old Courthouse Museum: “Courthouse Exhibit: Heart of the Community”, “Harper Lee- In Her Own Words”; “Truman Capote- A Childhood in Monroeville”; Probate Judge Millsap’s Office; The 1930’s Law Office, the original Courtroom maintained to its 1930’s appearance., and the Atticus Finch monument. Primarily designed for students studying the novel or Alabama History.  Groups must call ahead. 9:30 am- noon. May 14th performance will feature, Mary Badham (actress who played Scout in the film). Monroeville ’s 20th Annual Production of “To Kill a Mockingbird”

Sharing Scout’s Secrets featuring Mary Badham

Old Courthouse Museum- Downtown Square

Tickets: $15.00

Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout in the film version of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” returns to Monroeville .  Badham will engage the audience with her stories and personal experiences in Hollywood , race relations, and her life before, during and after “To Kill a Mockingbird.”  The Old Courthouse Museum with it’s exhibits: “Old Courthouse Heart of the Community,” “Harper Lee: In Her Own Words,” and “Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville ,” will open at 10 a.m. The self-guided walking tour brochure leads visitors to several points of interest including the Atticus Finch monument, the building which housed the office of A.C. Lee (Harper Lee’s father) and the nearby sites where Harper Lee and Truman Capote’s childhood homes were located.  Space is limited and reservations are suggested.   1pm-3pm . Year after year, visitors from all over the Southeast and beyond have come to spend a morning in the Old Courthouse as the citizens of Monroeville share their life stories to help teachers and readers of “To Kill a Mockingbird” understand the connections between Harper Lee’s hometown of Monroeville and the fictional Maycomb of Lee’s novel. Monroe County History Tour

Admission: free, SARIC Credit given for teachers.

Learn more about Monroe County ’s historic places.  This workshop includes an air-conditioned bus tour of historic sites in Monroe County- a county that’s older than the state of Alabama .  Attendees will learn about historical events and sites that focus on early Alabama history, including the Indian Territory era, pioneer settlement, the significance of the Federal Road , mill towns, and steamboat traffic on the Alabama River .  The workshop will give teachers and history enthusiasts a chance to tour sites that are not accessible to the public.  Teachers are given first priority, but the general public is also invited. 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring a sack lunch and meet at the Old Courthouse at 7:30 a.m.   Contact the museum (251) 575-7433 to register.

Fruitcake Festival - Celebrating Truman Capote

Admission charged. Old Courthouse Museum

Second annual festival celebrating Truman Capote and the Southern fruitcake made famous by Sook and Buddy in “A Christmas Memory.” Homemade fruitcakes of all kinds, specially made by local cooks, will be on sale, along with local pecans and other traditional Southern foods.  A Silent Auction will be held for fruitcakes in special boxes, as Capote made. Friday night’s program TBA.
