2 CONC ied their guns.  John Shiver Jr. tells the story about when he was a little boy he used to ri
2 CONC de around with his grandfather Jacob Allen Shiver.  This particular day he was standing betwe
2 CONC en Jacob and Dallas while riding around checking on the pine trees for the turpentine still
2 CONC s when Jacob and Dallas begin arguing about whom was the best shot.  When Jacob stopped and b
2 CONC oth Dallas and Jacob got out of the car John Jr. was real scared because he thought they wer
2 CONC e fixing to duel each other but they got out a silver dollar and put it up in a tree and bot
2 CONC h took turns shooting the silver dollar.  Both hit the silver dollar.  They got back into th
2 CONC e car and drove off with them still arguing about whom was the best shot.

2 CONC ead Affidavit Miles K. showed these bona fida improvements; one dwelling house, kitchen, smok
2 CONC e house, cotton house, corncrib, stables and one dug well and the value was $100.00.

2 CONT Miles Kate Shiver fought with the 53rd Alabama Mounted Regiment, Partisan Rangers, Compan
2 CONC y D during the Civil War.   Miles K. was paroled on 26 April 1865 in Augusta Georgia.

2 CONT This regiment was organized at Montgomery, in November 1862. A few weeks later it proceeded t

2 CONT 		Union Lt. Col. Edward Bloodgood held Brentwood, a station on the Nashville & Decatur Railro
2 CONC ad, with 400 men on the morning of March 25, 1863, when Confederate Brig. Gen. Nathan B. Forr
2 CONC est, with a powerful column, approached the town. The day before, Forrest had ordered Col. J.
2 CONC W. Starnes, commanding the 2nd Brigade, to go to Brentwood, cut the telegraph, tear up railro
2 CONC ad track, attack the stockade, and cut off any retreat. Forrest and the other cavalry brigad
2 CONC e joined Bloodgood about 7:00 am on the 25th. A messenger from the stockade informed Bloodgoo
2 CONC d that Forrest's men were about to attack and had destroyed railroad track. Bloodgood sough
2 CONC t to notify his superiors and discovered that the telegraph lines were cut. Forrest sent i
2 CONC n a demand for a surrender under a flag of truce but Bloodgood refused. Within a half hour, t

2 CONT There seems to be some records showing that James David Shiver was the first born of Miles K
2 CONC . Shiver and May Mary Harper even though the death certificate of William J. Shiver (17 Apri
2 CONC l 1861-22October 1945) and the headstone of James David Shiver(18 November 1861-15 March 1911
2 CONC ) shows James David to be the second child.  The following is a letter I received from Lind
2 CONC a Shiver Thomas (great, great grand daughter of Miles K. Shiver) telling about these record
2 CONC s and other information about Miles K. family:

2 CONT The only proof i have seen is the census records When you look at a 1860 Henry County, Alabam
2 CONC a census the only child Miles has is listed as David J.  Shiver , age 10 months old, born i
2 CONC n Alabama. (You have to keep in mind that after Jacob Shiver the blacksmith who was born in S
2 CONC outh Carolina , died around 1857 , Miles K. came into Alabama and settled. Having no where t
2 CONC o go , since  Jacob's estate was being sold at the courthouse  steps.) In this particular cen
2 CONC sus record the name of the town he was born in was called Woodville. Woodville , today is cal
2 CONC led Gordan, Alabama - Houston County. At that time , Miles brother Samuel A. Shiver was als
2 CONC o living in the household, there was also a 14 year old boy by the name of Henry Anglin stayi
2 CONC ng with them. I don't know if he was someone Miles took in and gave a home to or if he was ki
2 CONC n to them. Between 1860 and 1870 Samuel A. Shiver moved , but at this time i don't know wher
2 CONC e he went. There are several Samuel  A. Shiver's listed in the census records for different c
2 CONC ounties surrounding where Miles K. Shiver lived . When you go to an 1870 census  record you f
2 CONC ind Miles K.  Shiver living at Beaver Creek, Alabama  in Dale County , Beat # 6. You then se
2 CONC e on this census Miles little brother John Shiver living with him . You also see that Mary Ha
2 CONC rper Shiver was still alive in 1870 and had David J.  Shiver listed as the oldest , then Will
2 CONC iam J, then Jacob last of all , being the youngest. Henry Anglin must have left with Samuel A
2 CONC . Shiver , neither of them are in the household with Miles and family in 1870. Then you go t
2 CONC o an 1880 census record , Beat #6 , Dale County, Alabama , you find that somewhere between 18
2 CONC 70  and before 1880  Mary Harper Shiver , Miles first wife died and he married Dallas and Scr
2 CONC ap's mother , who was the sister of the first wife of Miles. The 1880 census list Dallas & Sc
2 CONC rap's mother as Margaret, ( death certificates state that her name was Evelyn , but maybe Mar
2 CONC garet was her so called name, i have not done any extensive research on the Harper line at th
2 CONC is time, but will have to at a later date , once i get these Shiver's straight .) The 1880 ce
2 CONC nsus will show that David J. Shiver is no longer at home, which makes sense of the story Cron
2 CONC e Shiver in New Mexico told me he had always been told, that David J. did not get along wit
2 CONC h his new stepmother and ran away from home as a young guy, along with his best friend, afte
2 CONC r Miles K. got a pick - ax after him .  It makes sense to me because his new stepmother woul
2 CONC d have also been his aunt , this to me explains why David J. Shiver line said they never kne
2 CONC w much about the rest of the Shiver's , and often wondered why . Looks like and sounds like h
2 CONC e was angry when he ran away from home , and really did'nt have a whole lot to do with any o
2 CONC f the family, but maybe once in awhile at an older age, perhaps.  In 1880 William J. Shiver w
2 CONC as still living at home and so was Jacob Allen , and  Dallas  with Scrap being the youngest
2 CONC . After Dallas & Scraps mother died , Miles married Sarah Long, which would have been after 1
2 CONC 880 , its highly possible he married sarah in 1885 or 1886. They had Lilla Shiver born in Mar
2 CONC ch of 1887, and Dillard F. Shiver born in 1889 of October. Sarah died , one has said of givin
2 CONC g childbirth , but i don't have any proof of this.  Then as i have found out through marriag
2 CONC e records we see that Miles K.  Shiver married again on August 20, 1890 to Lena Logan , whic
2 CONC h is documented in the Henry County Courthouse.  Apparently divorced her and married Margare
2 CONC t Ann Peeler on the same day , different year , August 20, 1891  in Dale County, Alabama . Th
2 CONC is marriage is also found documented in Ozark, Alabama - Dale County, Alabama. Margaret Ann P
2 CONC eeler was already pregnant with Josie before her and Miles married , you can tell by the reco
2 CONC rds . Good grounds for a divorce for  Lena  Logan. Lena and Miles had no children. Then Mile
2 CONC s and Margaret Ann Peeler are in the 1900 census record showing Scrap still living at home, a
2 CONC long with Lilla , Dillard, Josie, Bug, Burton K., and Pess. Jessie was not born at this time.

2 CONT time he met Saphrona Scott. The daughters referred to her as "Old Phrony",
2 CONT cause she stole Dallas from Molly. From what I have been told not only by
2 CONT them , but others, Saphrona was as mean as Dallas. Dallas's first wife
2 CONT remarried , said she couldn't put up with Saphrona & Dallas running
2 CONT around.They said Saphrona would come up to Dallas's house and call him at
2 CONT the gate to come out, with Molly being right there at home, too.

2 CONT This is what I do know, in 1880 he was still living at home. In 1890, he married
2 CONT  his first wife in Henry County, Alabama.
2 CONT Zula Lee his daughter was born in 1891 in Perdido, Alabama. So that tells us
2 CONT his line of travel for those years. He married his second wife in 1894 in
2 CONT Henry County, Alabama. Something happened, he remarried Saphrona a second
2 CONT time Feb 13, 1898 in Henry County, Alabama. His kids by Saphrona, first
2 CONT child born 1895, second child 1897 , third child born 1899. The land record
2 CONT copy you sent me was dated 1912  when he bought  property in Perdido. I had
2 CONT checked with Montgomery archives for a 1900- 1910 census on Dallas , and
2 CONT they showed nothing for him at that time. He appeared in a 1920 Baldwin
2 CONT County census as being 50 years old and Saphrona living there also. Its my
2 CONT belief that he was in Florida at some time during those missing years . His
2 CONT first wife Molly and his daughter Zula Lee stayed and lived in Walton
2 CONT County, Florida. I posted a query in Iron City, Utah seeking information on
2 CONT Zula. Dallas has a grandson there. I'm hoping he will see this query and
2 CONT respond. His name is Dallas M. Taunton. He is heavy into the Mormon
2 CONT religion. I'm just hoping he will respond . Maybe he would know a great deal
2 CONT about his Grandfather Dallas.

2 CONT According to John Shiver Jr. a black man went after Dallas Shiver with an axe and Dallas kill
2 CONC ed him.  Dallas sent word to the sheriff that he would come into his office the next day abou
2 CONC t this matter.  The sheriff was not in at the time so his deputy started getting up a posse t
2 CONC o go after Dallas.  During this time the sheriff came back and told his deputy NO, If Dalla
2 CONC s Shiver said he would come in the next day he would.  The sheriff told his deputy that he sh
2 CONC ould thank him for saving his life.  If he had tried to take Dallas he would have killed him.

2 CONT According to John Shiver Sr. Dallas would slip up on his brother Scrap Shiver and shoot his c
2 CONC orncob pipe out of his mouth.

2 CONT Another story by John Shiver Jr. is that one day Dallas came to Atmore Alabama to use the pho
2 CONC ne for a business call.  While he was on the phone talking business something happened to th
2 CONC e phone line and he was disconnected and could not get back in touch with his call.  He got s
2 CONC o mad he went looking for the owner (Mr. Brantly).  Well Mr. Brantly found out that Dallas wa
2 CONC s looking for him so he went and hid until Dallas went back to Perdido Alabama and had time t
2 CONC o cool off.

2 CONT According to John Shiver Jr.  A black drifter came into town wearing a black coat with tails
2 CONC .  He has started some trouble with the other blacks and Jacob Shiver had him before his cour
2 CONC t.  (Jacob was a Justice of the Peace at one time).  The black man stood up and said" he wa
2 CONC s not going to put up with this and he was leaving".  He started leaving and Jacob never sai
2 CONC d a word but Dallas Shiver was at the back of the room.  When the Black man got to Dallas h
2 CONC e grabbed him by the back of the neck and the seat of his pants took and threw him back up t
2 CONC o Jacob's table and said "brother I think he decide to come back".  (Jacob, Dallas & Scrap Sh

2 CONT William Long's daughter Sarah Ann Long, wanted to marry Henry Laird , a former neighbor , bu
2 CONC t William would not consent to the marriage. Sarah sent messages to Henry through a Mr. Brigg
2 CONC s. With the help of  Henry's brother William Laird and a friend, Wesley Rogers ( son of Henr
2 CONC y and Sarah Rogers ), they kidnapped Sarah on 28 August of 1848. Sarah and Henry went to Gene
2 CONC va, Alabama where Henry and his parents had moved , and were married on September 5, 1848.

2 CONT William Long was very upset over this and had William Laird and Wesley Rogers arrested. Willi

2 CONT James Anderson Long 's Confederate Military Records states he was a Private in Company H , 60
2 CONC th Alabama Infantry. He enlisted at Ranersville, Alabama on April 5, 1862 into Company B , Fi
2 CONC rst Battalion , Hillards Legion . Four companies of the 1st Battalion and six companies of th
2 CONC e 3rd Battalion , Hillards Legion, Alabama Volunteers, were consolidated by S.O. No. 280
2 CONC , A & I.G.O., dated November 25, 1863, to form the 60th Regiment Alabama Infantry.  He was  s
2 CONC everely wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He died in 186
2 CONC 7 of wounds that he recieved during the Civil War.  His name appears on an Oath of Allegianc
2 CONC e to the United States , subscribed and sworn to at Newport News, Virginia June 24, 1865. I
2 CONC t shows his place of residence as Butler County, Alabama with the following description ; Com
2 CONC plexion - Dark, hair- Black, Eyes-, height- 5 feet , 10 inches . It also states he was captur
2 CONC es at Farmville, Virginia on April 6, 1865. He was imprisoned at Newport News, Virginia. On t

2 CONC t Captain Ridgeway signed him up for the duration of the war. He was last paid by Captain Wil
2 CONC son on July 1, 1863. He was marked present with remarks , " Commutation due for the year endi

2 CONT This regiment was formed by consolidating four companies of the First battalion of Hilliard'
2 CONC s Legion with six companies of the Third battalion. The first battalion, seven companies, wen
2 CONC t out with Jack Thorington of Montgomery as lieutenant colonel, and John H. Holt of Montgomer
2 CONC y as major;* and the Third battalion, six companies, went out with John W. A. Sanford of Mont
2 CONC gomery as lieutenant colonel, and Hatch Cook of Georgia as major. The operations of the Hilli
2 CONC ard Legion are given in the memoranda of the Fifty-ninth Alabama. At Chicamauga, the First ba
2 CONC ttalion lost 168 killed and wounded of 230 engaged, and the third battalion lost 50 killed an
2 CONC d wounded of 219 engaged. Organized at Charleston, Tennessee, Nov. 25, 1863, the Sixtieth pas
2 CONC sed through the trials and perils of the winter campaign in east Tennessee. In the spring i
2 CONC t reached Richmond, and lost heavily at Drewry's, where the regiment was complimented on th
2 CONC e field by Gen. Gracie, as the Third battalion had been at Chicamauga by Gen. Preston of Kent
2 CONC ucky. The regiment was in the trenches at Petersburg for eight months, and lost continually b
2 CONC y the almost incessant shelling. At White-oaks Road and Hatcher's Run the Sixtieth was full
2 CONC y engaged, and its loss was severe. At Appomattox, "when the news of the surrender was receve

2 CONT After the Tullahoma Campaign, Rosecrans renewed his offensive, aiming to force the Confederat
2 CONC es out of Chattanooga. The three army corps comprising Rosecrans' s army split and set out fo
2 CONC r Chattanooga by separate routes. In early September, Rosecrans consolidated his forces scatt
2 CONC ered in Tennessee and Georgia and forced Bragg's army out of Chattanooga, heading south. Th
2 CONC e Union troops followed it and brushed with it at Davis' Cross Roads. Bragg was determined t
2 CONC o reoccupy Chattanooga and decided to meet a part of Rosecrans's army, defeat them, and the
2 CONC n move back into the city. On the 17th he headed north, intending to meet and beat the XXI Ar
2 CONC my Corps. As Bragg marched north on the 18th, his cavalry and infantry fought with Union cava
2 CONC lry and mounted infantry which were armed with Spencer repeating rifles. Fighting began in ea
2 CONC rnest on the morning of the 19th, and Bragg's men hammered but did not break the Union line
2 CONC . The next day, Bragg continued his assault on the Union line on the left, and in late mornin
2 CONC g, Rosecrans was informed that he had a gap in his line. In moving units to shore up the supp
2 CONC osed gap, Rosencrans created one, and James Longstreet's men promptly exploited it, driving o
2 CONC ne-third of the Union army, including Rosecrans himself, from the field. George H. Thomas too
2 CONC k over command and began consolidating forces on Horseshoe Ridge and Snodgrass Hill. Althoug
2 CONC h the Rebels launched determined assaults on these forces, they held until after dark. Thoma
2 CONC s then led these men from the field leaving it to the Confederates. The Union retired to Chat
2 CONC tanooga while the Rebels occupied the surrounding heights.

2 CONC lland. He is listed as a passenger on a ship named the TWO BROTHERS, captain Thomas Arnot. H
2 CONC e qualified at the New York County Court House in Philadelphia on September 28, 1753, where h
2 CONC e signed the Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown and the Oath of Abjurment, denying any A
2 CONC llegiance to any other sovereign. (records located: Passenger Immigration List # 108 and Inde
2 CONC x, first edition, Source #2: Pennsylvania German Pioneers, by Ralph B. Strousburger, Vol., I
2 CONC , pg. 564 and Vol., 2, pg. 654. You will note that he signed Johna, either German or French
2 CONC , but he signed "William", definitely English and Shiver or French Shiever. All three of thes
2 CONC e names mean the same thing, Sheppard or keeper of the flock.  All that Englishmen did in Phi
2 CONC ladelphia was to see the name Schaffer and write down the English version of the same name, S
2 CONC HIVER. John never changed his name back to the original spelling as many immigrants did. Perh
2 CONC aps he was trying to tell us something.
2 CONT Our next record of John William Shiver is the marriage of John William Shiver to Hannah Clemm
2 CONC ons in 1760, in Kershaw County, South Carolina. John and Hannah settled down in South Carolin
2 CONC a and raised their children amid the Clemmons, Flemming, Burch and Manning Scot Families. Hi
2 CONC s children married into these families and to this day use these sir names as Shiver first na
2 CONC mes. (See Georgia and Alabama Families).
2 CONT On March 25, 1767 John Shiver bought 100 acres of land from John Phillip Pain (Payne) for 5
2 CONC 0 pounds. In Fredrickburg Township, known today as Camden, South Carolina. Sarah Shiver, daug
2 CONC hter of John and Hannah married a Mr. Payne and is listed as Sarah Payne in the Family Bibl
2 CONC e records. The Payne and Shiver families intermarried and were neighbors in the early record
2 CONC s of Camden. Many land transactions evidence of there close relations, as well as being cour
2 CONC t appointed appraisers of estate, along with being purchasers at "sales of goods and chattels
2 CONC ". They were also witnesses for each other when legal documents were drawn.

2 CONT In the 1790 SC census, John Shiver sold 500 bales of cotton.

2 CONT Many stories have been handed down in the family about Catherine Cooper SHIVERS. Although som
2 CONC e of the stories have been disproves, she was certainly a colorful family member. Perhaps sh
2 CONC e could spin a good story herself, so her tales were well remembered by her grandchildren. Mo
2 CONC st of the family believed that Catherine was born in England, yet the census records and mili
2 CONC tary, papers list her birthplace as Georgia. The Alabama children thought that Catherine's mo
2 CONC ther came to America but never learned to speak English. She spoke only French. Everyone wh
2 CONC o remembers any-thing about Catherine is sure that she went to Judson College in Marion, AL a
2 CONC nd some believe that she was in the first class taught. The college first opened in 1839 as J
2 CONC udson Female Institute and does not have records of its earlier students. At that time, the
2 CONC y taught children of all ages. In 1933, Catherine's father, William COOPER, was listed in th
2 CONC e Balbour Co. AL census as the owner of fifteen slaves. If everything had gone well, he woul
2 CONC d have been financially able to send his nine-year-old daughter away to school. Catherine cou
2 CONC ld read and write and the family stories indicate that she was a schoolteacher. Catherine mar
2 CONC ried Jacob when she was 18 years old and became a widow at 29 just as the Civil War was begin
2 CONC ning. Catherine was left with 6 children, a plantation and one slave. Before the war was ove
2 CONC r there was no food left for her children. Catherine and the slave would ride out at night t
2 CONC o the smokehouses of richer people and steal food. There was no salt so Catherine learned t
2 CONC o dig the dirt from under the smokehouse, boil it, and extract the salt. Five years after th
2 CONC e Civil War, when the 1870 census was taken, Catherine was living in Victoria, Coffee Co., AL
2 CONC . This was very near Pea River so it may or may not have been on her plantation. However, a 3
2 CONC 1-year-old man named Taylor Johnson was listed as the head of the household. Catherine was li
2 CONC sted as housekeeper. Also living in the house were Catherine's 4 youngest children, a lady na
2 CONC med Polly, Ellingtojn and her three children and a 35-year-old farmer named James Ormond. Th
2 CONC e 1880 census finds Catherine as the head of her household again. The post office was liste
2 CONC d as Centerville, which no longer exists, so we only know this was somewhere in Coffee Co. Tw
2 CONC o of Catherine's daughters, Catherine (age 12) and Dorcas (ace 20) still lived with Catherine
2 CONC . Two young men, Thomas (age 8) and Lawson (age 4) also living with Catherine were listed a
2 CONC s her sons.
2 CONT Married to Jacob Shiver III who was born about 1815 in South Carolina and died 12-1-1859 at t
2 CONC he age of 44 years old. He married Catherine M. Cooper on November 2, 1848 in Coffee County
2 CONC , Alabama. Jacob's mother was Sarah Ann Swilley and his father was Jacob Shiver II. Catherine
2 CONC 's father was Samuel Cooper and her mother was Mary Prestwood. Catherine was born in Wilkerso
2 CONC n, Georgia. 
2 CONT Catherine's son was Samuel Shiver born about 1850 and is buried in a poorly marked grave nex
2 CONC t to his mother at Jack Springs Cemetery in McCullough. The size of the slab indicates a grow
2 CONC n person and not a child. No dates listed on slab.

2 CONC lds grave , William H.  Shiver, is William Howell Shiver , born June 16, 1945 in McCulloug
2 CONC h , Alabama. He died  October 10, 1945. He was the infant of J.W. and Madge Shepherd Shiver
2 CONC . J.W. Shiver lived at Route 3 , Atmore , Alabama. J.W.  Shiver was born in McCullough , Alab
2 CONC ama  his wife was born in Enterprise , Alabama.  Thomas J. Shiver was the son of Jake Shive
2 CONC r & Catherine Cooper Shiver. Thomas Jefferson  Shiver was born in Coffee County, Alabama Febr
2 CONC uary 17, 1862. His wife was Mary P. Shiver. Thomas J. Shiver had a brother named  Samuel T. S
2 CONC hiver , who is buried at Jack Springs Cemetery, his wife was Annie Shiver. Samuel T. Shiver d
2 CONC ied April 3, 1924. I'm thinking right now that the picture you sent me of Sam Shiver 's grav
