“O come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.  Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise”  (Psalm 95:1-2)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As many of you know I’m in an ongoing educational program at Concordia Seminary.  The program is helpful in that I continue to learn from both fellow pastors from all over the country, and I usually gain much from the required readings.   This January I am taking a class titled “Preaching and Worship”.  It is my first preaching class since Seminary, and so  looking forward to rethinking the whole preaching approach and how it fits into the rest of the service.   I ran across the following quote focusing on the motivation for worship from a book titled “How shall we worship”, by Marva Dawn.  Usually we think of weekly participation in the realm of choice, a good choice,  but a choice nonetheless.   She writes “There is a subversion of genuine worship that happens when we turn attending worship into a matter of our own choice instead of obedience to God’s command and the reception of sheer grace.”(p. 131)   Obviously she writes more, and I hesitate to take a quote out of context, but I think her point is a good one.   The reason we go to worship  is not first because of its style (contemporary or traditional).  It is not because we were raised to do so, nor does it rest on our ability to get up in the morning.  We are to participate in worship not because of the friendliness of the people, the charisma or lack thereof in the preacher, but rather because God has called us to do so (See 3rd commandment).  It is in hearing and receiving that Word within the body of believers we get the “sheer grace” of our Lord Jesus Christ.   Other things in worship matter, but obedience to God’s commandment and the receiving of sheer grace should always be at the very top of our list.   Just some thought for food.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Krenz
