Trinity Lutheran Mission Statement

In grateful response to God’s grace and empowered by the Holy Spirit through Word and Sacrament, the mission of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hoffman, Illinois is to make known the love of Christ by word and deed within our congregation, community, and the world (John 20:23, 1 Peter 2:9, Matthew 28:18-20). Our members will be equipped through the Word of God with the faith, skill, knowledge and desire to live as witnesses of Christ’s love.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians  3:17

“LET US COME BEFORE HIM WITH THANKSGIVING…PSALM 95:2A

Dear friends and members of Trinity,

As a child I remember returning to school in the fall and summarizing what happened during my summer vacation.  While this summer has not exactly been a vacation much has happened congregationally and personally of which I/we can give thanks.  Bear with me, as I highlight my summer under the theme “Thanks be to God…

  1. Thanks be to God for the eight congregational baptisms we have had since the May 24th.

  1. Thanks be to God for the sixty helpers at this years VBS.

  1. Thanks be to God for the eighty eight children participating in this years VBS.

  1. Thanks be to God for servants like Rev. Jim Gimbel who spoke at our June 14th outdoor service.

  1. Thanks be to God for Camp Restore in New Orleans.

  1. Thanks be to God for the eight local servants who went and helped remodel a home in New Orleans.

  1. Thanks be to God for summer nights without meetings.

  1. Thanks be to God for the chance to run with my children.

  1. Thanks be to God for the life of faith and heavenly joy granted to Howard Woker, Robert Terry, Carl Nottmeyer, and Walter Wessel.

  1. Thanks be to God for Junior, Joanne, Michael, and William Kleiboeker, who faithfully tend to the lawn care needs of the church, school, and cemetery.

  1.  Thanks be to God for the chance to recharge my batteries at pastor camp (four weeks at the Seminary).

  1. Thanks be to God for patient and caring teachers/professors.

  1. Thanks be to God for in-laws who help with child care.

  1. Thanks be to God for corn on the cob, strawberries, and peaches.

  1. Thanks be to God for Jesus who sustains me/us through thick and thin.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Krenz

CONGREGATIONAL SERVANT EVENT TO CAMP RESTORE

In August of 2005, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and its neighborhood were flooded when the levies of Lake Ponchartrain broke.  Only about one dozen church members remained in the area.  This congregation could have closed its doors and disappeared, but instead, they became Camp Restore and are actively practicing what we have learned about servanting. Construction, clean-up, lawn mowing, and prayer walks down the street are all part of daily routine at Camp Restore.

On first day orientation, Pastor Ed told us not to confuse Camp Restore with the TV show, “Extreme Home Makeover” as we would not make glamorous changes in the few days we were there.  We quickly learned after meeting the people from New Orleans that the caring presence of the people from the church meant as much as the drywall we were hanging. We were a positive reminder of faith and these people are in need of anything positive because the negative reminders of the flood are still all around them. One of the most prominent reminders is the spray painted numbers on the front doors of many homes that were left by the National Guard when they did the search for bodies.

On previous youth group events I met a lady named Kathy Wendling.  She now works for Ministry Recovery in New Orleans and she helps at Camp Restore.  When she saw me, she quickly asked, “Where is your youth group?”  I think she was a bit confused when I pointed at the table where Jim & Chris Tyberendt, Bill Lueking, Jim Roeckeman, Pastor Krenz, Dwayne Brink and Chuck Knuf were sitting.  I simply responded that we brought our “senior” youth group this time.   What I discovered is that our “senior” youth group was not a lot different from the high school youth group events I attended.  Chris Tyberendt is still a born leader so he was assigned to help the slower students, I mean Pastor Krenz, learn how to operate a drill and apply mud to drywall. Bill Lueking and Jim Roeckeman had to be separated when they had their little spats over pencils and tools.  Dwayne Brink and Chuck Knuf were quiet and did as they were told by the Team Leader, Jim Tyberendt and I applied first aid to the inevitable injury.

So, what did we learn from this experience?  First, things go better when you start the day with devotions and prayer.  Second, Pastor Krenz can pray when people from the south are giving their “Amens” and “Praise the Lord” in midsentence.  Third, it really was about faith and community, not just construction. Last, a congregational servant event with adults can be very successful!  It was a great trip.  Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this endeavor.

Blessings,

Kathie Knuf

Taldykorgan Tidbit

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21

So SAD . . .

Since our return to Kazakhstan at the end of March, there has been a significant change in our lives. The position that Morris accepted a call to serve in last July has been eliminated effective June 30, 2008. This decision was a shock to us and since then life has taken a new twist. We are busy sorting through our things, beginning to pack suitcases, and closing down the apartment.

Although our time in Taldykorgan was short, we praise the Lord for the opportunity to serve him among the people here. The time was filled with much joy and the work has been exciting. We have met many wonderful people and have seen how the Lord is working in their lives to further His Kingdom.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and encouragement while we served in both Russia and Kazakhstan. Each of you has been a vital part of the team for the work in this part of the world. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

So GLAD . . .

We are glad to welcome Colter Knippa to Taldykorgan from June 8 through August 10. He is the first short-term missionary to answer the call to serve here! His main focus will be at an English camp that Training Center Boomerang has held each summer for the past ten years.  The camp is quite appropriately called “English in Nature.”  Colter will serve for two weeks at the camp as an English coach and then return to the city for a break before his next two week session begins.

Colter contacted us about the possibility of serving in Kazakhstan after  hearing about the need for camp counselors during our visit to Concordia Irvine this past February. He is very enthusiastic for this opportunity to serve as Christ’s ambassador to the people of Kazakhstan. If anyone would like to know more about short-term missionary work, please contact LCMS-World Mission at 1-800-433-3954 or www.lcmsworldmission.org.

We continue to work among the blind community and are glad to see how God is working through them.

Prayer Requests

A LETTER OF THANKS

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As many of you know, I am entering my final semester at Concordia University Chicago.  I have had a wonderful experience over the last 3 years at Concordia, and have been fortunate enough to work with many talented Christian individuals throughout may time there.  I have done lots of observing in the last 2 years at several different schools in the Chicago area.  I have the most experience in Kindergarten, first and second grade.  Beginning in August, I will student teach in qa first grade classroom at Immanuel Lutheran School in Elmhurst.  My cooperating teacher has been teaching at Immanuel for over 25 years and this year we have 30 students.  I have heard wonderful things about Immanuel School from Concordia students who have observed or student taught there.   I am looking forward to teaching at Immanuel.

After graduating in December, I will likely come home for a few months and substitute teach for a semester, or until I receive a call.  The call process has changed significantly from the days when individuals were just handed an envelope with their destination written inside.  Today, those entering the call process have the opportunity to choose what district they would prefer to teach in, or what age level they feel most comfortable teaching.  As for me, I feel the most comfortable in the lower grades and would prefer to teach anywhere from Kindergarten to third grade.   As for being placed, I am open to teaching anywhere and trust that God will lead me to a school where I can best serve him,  as well as tend to the needs of my students and school.  I am very excited about going through the call process and seeing what God has in store for me!

Thank You Trinity Hoffman for your prayers and financial support.

God’s Richest Blessings,

Lindsey Knolhoff.
