A preschooler reading the Book of Mormon?

One of the first steps to helping your little one become a successful reader and lifelong learner is to introduce them to the alphabet. Hopefully, you have had some fun doing this together over the past few months! These important activities are not just for children on a homeschool curriculum. Below is another essential skill for beginning learners. Gradually begin to add it to your daily routine. (See previous newsletters, which are archived at the website above on the “Press” page.)

Materials needed

The February newsletter mentioned purchasing a $3 missionary copy of the Book of Mormon for your child. This hardcover edition will stay open while a child is reading more easily than the softcover edition, which is .50 cheaper. Some colored pencils will also be needed.

Circle and recite

Tell your child they are now ready to read their very own scriptures! With colored pencils, your scriptures, and your child’s own copy of the Book of Mormon, sit side-by-side at a table. Place the flashcards they are practicing for the day (lower and uppercase) above your child’s book. Tell them to look in their book on any page they choose and circle one. Tell them you will be reading and marking in your scriptures at the same time. It is encouraging for your child to see you model this activity by reading your scriptures while they “read” theirs. If looking for a letter seems difficult for your child at any time, tell them to keep trying until you finish reading just three more verses in your scriptures. Show your child how much three verses looks like. After your child circles a letter, either lower or uppercase, have them recite the name of the letter back to you. If they have forgotten its name, repeat it to them. Then have them look at the flashcard and say it ten more times while you keep track with your fingers. Tell your child that as soon as they have found four more of the letters (lower or uppercase), they are done reading their scriptures for the day! Remember to have your child recite aloud the name of a letter each time one is found. Compliment and praise your child generously for their efforts!

Follow-up

If desired, space the daily activities found in these newsletters throughout the day. You may want your child to choose one of the activities before giving permission to do other things. As explained in the March newsletter, when your child can remember their letter the following day without any prompting, it is time to begin teaching the next letter of the alphabet. Most of the letters of the alphabet are easy to find in the scriptures. J is found often in the book of Jacob, Alma 19 speaks of the Queen, V is in haVe, X is found in many words beginning with E, and Mosiah and Alma write frequently of Zarahemla. If necessary, show your child where to search for words in the index. Don’t worry about reviewing with your child letters learned on previous days. A future newsletter will cover reviewing!

This unique program uses the Book of Mormon to help a child:

·        grow closer to the things of God

·        develop a scripture reading habit

·        learn how to read and write

Helping a child learn or practice reading and writing skills can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. Head Start with the Book of Mormon: Using the Scriptures to teach Children Reading and Writing Skills, by Vicki Lynn Rasmussen (42 brief pages + 70 pages of flashcards) will give parents and grandparents the skills needed to nurture great readers using a simple scriptural plan—based on the top 50 words in the Book of Mormon. From a toddler hearing a story read, to a child reading silently, the three included phases will benefit all learners. Watch as your child also develops the habit of regular scripture use!

Thank you for purchasing this book! What better gift can you give a child than the gift of literacy? As referenced on the back cover, the author’s royalties will be donated to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. The book can be ordered at the website above, or purchased at LDS bookstores, and Wal-Mart locations throughout Utah.
