Merry Christmas!!

Best wishes for a season of giving! As we celebrate the birth of Christ, we are ever thankful for the life He gave us. Without His exemplar life, redemptive death, and miraculous resurrection, the grandeur of His birthday would not be what it is today. It is my hope that we will find peaceful moments within these busy winter days to reflect upon God’s greatest gift to us. Reading tips will continue next month, but for December, here is my gift to you:

The True Story of:

"The Night Before Christmas"

by Vicki Rasmussen

'Twas the night before taxes, and all through the town

Not a room left to sleep in, for miles around.

The travelers were tired from searching and worn,

And hoped that their child would not soon be born.

The stable they found had clean straw for soft beds,

So they knelt and gave thanks and rested their heads.

And Mary with her blanket, and Joseph his cloak,

Had just settled themselves when before long awoke . . .

When out of the still, Mary spoke with a matter,

That set Joseph's heart going all pitter-patter.

Away to a manger he flew like a dash,

Threw in it some hay and was back in a flash.

One star on the breast of the new-risen moon

Gave the luster of mid-day to everything soon,

When, what to his wondering eyes did appear,

But a new born child, held gently and dear,

By a worthy new mother, who lovingly bore,

What they knew in a moment was: The Savior.

More rapid than eagles the angels they came,

And they sang and they shouted, and called Him by name:

"A Savior! Christ the Lord! born today, and for you!

Go, shepherds! to Bethlehem! the baby to view!

Fear not these good tidings! for great joy is our call!

Glory to God! peace on earth! and good will to all!"

The wise men from before wild king Herod did fly,

And then worshipped the Christ child, placing gifts by,

Now away to Egypt this family they flew,

With a warning from God, of what Herod would do.

And then, in his dreaming, Joseph heard from God

That Herod had died so they journeyed abroad.

The child grew in grace and spirit and wisdom

And stature, and in favor with God and with men.

John was cousin to Christ, a right honorable self,

But he paused when Christ asked to be baptized Himself.

A word from His mouth and a nod of His head

Soon gave John to know he had nothing to dread.

Christ spoke many words, and went straight to His work,

Fulfilled every scripture; and then did not shirk,

And laying His body aside as He chose,

Then waiting three days, from the tomb He arose.

He went to His twelve, to His lambs gave a whistle,

And away The Word spread like the down of a thistle.

And so now we exclaim, though He's out of our sight,

"Happy birthday dear Jesus, please bless us this night!"
