Thank you
for reading our August 2008 newsletter!

is dedicated to Words that make the future brighter!
Thank you!
I want to start out with a
BIG “thank you” to all of you who let me know how much you’ve enjoyed using the
Book of Mormon Head Start program and how it’s helping your family! I SOO
appreciate any and all feedback you can give me. I realize it may be yet a
while before the results of a program like this are in—so keep the feedback
coming—it thrills me to rejoice with you along the way!! (If you would like to
let me reprint your quotes in a newsletter, let me know and others may be motivated
by hearing your stories!) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Hopefully, you have had some
fun introducing your child to the names of letters and numbers over the past
few months! (These important activities are not just for children on a
homeschool curriculum.) At this point—after your child has completed the steps
for learning the names of letters and numbers one time through—you will want to
see if they can still remember them. This step is especially important when a
child learns them “in order” so you can check and see if they still know them
in random order.
Continue using the 3”x5”
index cards you used previously to teach your child the names of the letters.
This time, group the alphabet into sets of similarly shaped letters: a-c-e-o,
b-d-g-p-q, f-i-j-l-r-t, h-m-n-u-v-w, k-x-y-s-z, C-D-G-O-Q, B-E-F-H-P-R,
I-J-L-T, M-N-U-V-W, and, A-K-X-Y-S-Z. This will help your child learn the
similarities between letters, and if needed, give you an opportunity to point
them out.
Select a set of letters, and
teach one letter at a time like before (“point to and repeat,” “write and
recite,” and “circle and recite,” see newsletters March, April and May,
archived at the website above on the “Press” page). This time however, when you
review a letter with your child, also practice with your child the other
letters you have reviewed so far in the set. If your child knows the name of a
letter when it is first reintroduced, praise them, and select the next letter!
Two or three times throughout the day, ask your child if they can still
remember the name of the letter they are reviewing. Repeat the name if they
don’t remember it, and have them say it back a few times.
If desired, space the daily
activities found in these newsletters (see bold heading above) throughout the
day. You may need to have your child choose one of the activities before giving
them permission to do other things! When your child can remember the name of
their letter the following day without any prompting, review the next letter(s)
in the set you are reviewing. As always, reading a story to your child each day
is an important activity at all stages in your child’s development.
This
unique program uses the Book of Mormon to help a child:
·
grow closer to the things of God
·
develop a scripture reading habit
·
learn how to read and write
Helping a child learn or practice reading and writing skills can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. Head Start with the Book of Mormon: Using the Scriptures to teach Children Reading and Writing Skills, by Vicki Lynn Rasmussen (42 brief pages + 70 pages of flashcards) will give parents and grandparents the skills needed to nurture great readers using a simple scriptural plan—based on the top 50 words in the Book of Mormon. From a toddler hearing a story read, to a child reading silently, the three included phases will benefit all learners. Watch as your child also develops the habit of regular scripture use!
Thank
you for purchasing this book! What better gift can you give a child than the
gift of literacy? As referenced on the back cover, the author’s royalties will
be donated to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. The book can be ordered at the
website above, or purchased at LDS bookstores, and Wal-Mart locations
throughout Utah.
Please email any questions or comments you may have to:
I hope to chat with you again soon!
Hugs & wishes, Vicki (o;`~
