Beginning to write

One of the first steps to helping your little one become a successful reader and lifelong learner is to introduce them to the alphabet. This is a great time of year to begin doing so with your preschooler! This important activity is not just for children on a homeschool curriculum. Below is another essential skill for beginning learners. Gradually begin to add it to your daily routine. (See previous newsletters, which are also archived at the website above on the “Press” page.)

Materials needed

A drawing pad or some scratch paper, and crayons or a pencil.

Write and recite

Tell your child, “Now I’m going to let you try to make your own letters on a piece of paper!” (Replace the word “letters” with the name of the letter they are practicing for the day.) Give your child some choices by asking whether they want to draw at a table, sitting on the couch, laying on a rug or carpet, etc. Offer several crayons and something hard to write on, if needed. Lay the two flashcards nearby (lower and uppercase) and ask your child to look at them closely to copy them. Your child can make the letters any size. Tell your child to make five copies of each card and to recite the name of the letter again each time they make one. Let your child know that you will be nearby and listening. Tell your child when they are finished, you will both take turns picking out the best match to each card! After they are done, snuggle up together on the couch again. Say to your child, “Show me which one of both letters you think is the best!” Then tell them which one is your favorite. Be sure to point out good compliments behind your choice, and give lots of praise for their great artwork! Switch to lined paper when your child is comfortable using a pencil.

Follow-up

If this activity (or the ones in previous newsletters) seem to tire out your child, space them throughout the day. Your child may need to select one of the activities before permission is given to do other desired activities. Each time your child watches you make flashcards for their next letter, tell them how you are forming a letter. At some point your child may even ask you to help them practice forming their letters! At this point you can tell your child to make them by starting at the top, and to make sure they “kiss” the line! When your child begins to master lettering on lined paper, have them make the letters two lines tall. This will help them learn to make letters properly proportioned. Don’t worry about reviewing letters learned thus far. A future newsletter will explain another essential activity for beginning learners!

This unique program uses the Book of Mormon to help a child:

·        grow closer to the things of God

·        develop a scripture reading habit

·        learn how to read and write

Helping a child learn or practice reading and writing skills can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. Head Start with the Book of Mormon: Using the Scriptures to teach Children Reading and Writing Skills, by Vicki Lynn Rasmussen (42 brief pages + 70 pages of flashcards) will give parents and grandparents the skills needed to nurture great readers using a simple scriptural plan—based on the top 50 words in the Book of Mormon. From a toddler hearing a story read, to a child reading silently, the three included phases will benefit all learners. Watch as your child also develops the habit of regular scripture use!

Thank you for purchasing the book! What better gift can you give a child than the gift of literacy? As referenced on the back cover, the author’s royalties will be donated to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. Total donations to date are above $1,500! The book can be ordered at the website above, LDS bookstores, or Wal-Mart locations throughout Utah.
