October 2009 Meeting
We plan to meet on October 13th (second Tuesday of the month) in the
Gander Mountain store at 6:30
pm until 9 pm. We need to vacate the store by 9 pm, as that is
when they close up shop. Trust you will free the evening.
Also, feel free to bring and share munchy foods and or
sodas and other drinks. Please, no alcoholic beverages - to honor
the store's specific request.
The program will feature a multi media
presentation by Tanzanian mountain guide Yusuf Ngaina, who at the age
of 34 has been on the roof of Africa some 200 times. He will be
speaking at different places while in the Rochester area and we've had
the good fortune of booking him on the very night we normally
meet. Be prepared to throw some bucks into the pot, as it would
be right for us to help with the expenses of this big and costly trip
for him. Here is some background information:
Yusuf, 34, was born in a mud and
wattle hut in the Pare Hills of Tanzania. He attended school, but
had to leave at an early age due to lack of money. He then worked
a variety of seasonal jobs, including being a porter on Mt. Kilimanjaro
for tourists making the climb.
Yusuf’s hopes of someday
becoming a doctor were replaced when he realized he could make a better
living by learning to be a guide. He then attended PROTS, a
tourism
college in Tanzania where he excelled and earned a degree with a heavy
focus on ecology. His education was supported by past climbers
from
the USA (most of whom are from the Rochester area), who paid his
college
tuition and supported his family while he was in school.
Yusuf visited the USA in 2005 and
gave over 20 talks to groups as diverse as country club gatherings and
incarcerated youth. His honesty and humor made his presentations
both enjoyable and refreshing. Yusuf has helped thousands of
people
safely climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. He
is well respected on the mountain, where he has been chosen by his
peers
to administer the Guides Association because of his strength of
character.
Some of the topics on which Yusuf
can speak include (but are not limited to):
