For over 200 years, individuals have contributed their service to fire service in their community. These individuals bring to each department varied levels of education, experience and personalities. During their fire service, they create unique memories, friendships that last a lifetime, and most important, each individual builds a sense of pride that comes from participating in a most respected service.

The Importance of Volunteer Fire Departments

Reasons to become a volunteer with the Lacona Fire Department:

Volunteers belong to a special group of people.

Volunteering builds self esteem by developing an "I CAN do this" attitude.

Volunteering as a local firefighter can be one facet of your success in becoming a career firefighter.

Volunteering provides you with the ability to learn, grow, be challenged, and do something that makesa difference.

There are so many areas of responsibility within the fire service.
You do not have to be on the front lines fighting the actual fires to help your local fire department.
Our success depends on many varied talents and abilities from our local residents and neighbors.

A few of these areas are:

Public Education -
Are you able to help us promote fire prevention to the public?
Maintenance -
Do you have the knowledge and ability to help the department a few hours a month performing maintenance tasks within the department?
CPR & First Aid or EMT Program -
Are you willing to learn new skills or use the medical skills you already possess within your community?
School District Functions -
Are you able to spot and encourage youth that could benefit from serving their community?
Auxiliary Groups -
Would groups already formed within the community want to help us during community events?
Fund raising -
Would you be willing to volunteer at our fund raising events?
Web Page Design and/or Maintenance -
Would you be able to help out a few hours a month by sharing your knowledge of computer skills to enhance our web page?
Grant Writing -
Are you knowledgeable in the field of grant writing, or able to assist others learn how to successfully attain grant money?
Advertising -
Are you knowledgeable in the field of creating and placing ad's for events and reports?

Requirements for Membership
Annual Physical Exam
Arson Check (NYS Law)
Age 18 or older for regular member
Age 16 or 17 for restricted member
Attend regular membership meetings, training, fund raisers, and other department activities.

The fire service often times have not because we ask not.
