Bicycle Patrol
This program was introduced in 1998. The program was funded by a grant from the Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse. To date, the LeMars Police Department has three fully equipped police bikes, with five officers involved with the program. This program is intended to enhance the Police Department's visability and allow officers to be more approachable. Officers will regularly patrol areas that are not accessible by vehicle, such as Parks, campgrounds and the recreation trail. The downtown business district will also be patrolled on evenings and weekends.
Bike safety tips:
Obey all traffic rules.(just like for cars)
Give hand signals to show which way you're going.
Drive on right hand side of road.
Always wear a bike helmet.
Always ride single.(an extra person makes it harder to balance)
Avoid busy streets.
Look out for pedestrians.(They have the "right of way")
Travel single file when with a group.
Drive in a straight line. (cutting in and out of traffic is dangerous)
License your bike; it is required by city ordinance.(Bring it to the LeMars Police Dept. to have it licensed. It is free of charge) |
