Amateur or HAM radio is a hobby I got into about 3 years ago.  I don't think a lot of people understand just exactly what ham radio is, so I'll try to explain it a little bit.

To put it in a nutshell, ham frequencies start at 1800 kHz (160 Meters) and go up to 1300 mHz (23 cm), and have 6 different license classes: Novice, Technician, Technician Plus*, General, Advanced, and Extra.

These classes are separated by different tests that must be completed before recieving a license.

A novice must have passed  a 30 question written examination and a 5 wpm morse code test.

A technician must have passed   a 55 question written examination (including the 30 question novice test) and no morse code test.

A technician plus licensee must have passed a 55 question written examination and a 5 wpm morse code test.

A general must have passed the technician plus a  25 question written examination and a 13 wpm morse code test.

An advanced licensee must have passed the general plus a 50 question written examination.

An extra classed licensee must have passed the advanced plus a 40 question written examination and a 20 wpm morse code test.

Although the above rules are going to be changed and you can see them here.

    Anyway, here's the scoop....

KC8DBA

I hold a general license, working on my advanced (one of these days) and I have three radios; an Icom 2710 (2m 440cm) and an Icom 228h (2m) are my uhf and vhf radios.  These radios use repeaters to talk any distance and is usually no more than 100 miles. The lower frequency radios such as my RCI 2950 (10m) and below are the radios that 'talk around the world.'  My 2meter antennas are both Diamond SG 7500 and my 10meter antenna is a K40.

I am a member of the American Radio Relay League.

Here's that practice test page again, or here's another one.
