Makes about 3½ dozen
Cream shortening, gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and almond extract. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients and water. Chill the dough for about 2 hours. Form into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Place on baking sheet and press down to ¼ inch thickness. Press almond into center of each. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
