Proper Swing Speed

Jim Vokes ~ April 16, 1999

It is my opinion that you should hunt very slow and that impatience will make you miss a lot of deep coins.  At least in my part of the country, the really deep coins are very soft sounding and so I never concentrate on the meter.  First the sound and then the meter.

I try to visualize ‘painting’ the ground with the coil.  I tend to use short swings with repeated coverage. Especially at a large site, the tendancy is to cover it all and go way too fast. I make up my mind to do a small area (like 50ft square) in one location thoroughly and if I don't find much, I move to another location and hunt another small area.

There is an old adage I just made up.. You can hurry and find a lot of coins or you can go slowly and find them all!

Shhhh.. don't tell anyone this tip!
