Mountain Biking in Monroe County Parks -- Not Allowed?
Currently, mountain biking, or off-road bicycling, in Monroe County parks is illegal.
This includes parks where this restriction is not actually posted.
You could be ticketed with a $50 fine, and some people have reported that officers have threatened
to take their bikes away.
This is too bad, since Monroe County has great parks, many of which are unused and
unknown to most residents. Tryon Park has great potential for mountain biking, for example.
Black Creek Park is huge.
But not one off-road area in Monroe County parks is designated for bikes!
And volunteer groups could help to do trail maintenance for free (i.e. no cost to taxpayers)!
Civic groups, and hiking and bicycling clubs could be recruited.
Consider:
- Monroe County has an abundance of parks
- Some parks go virtually unused (Tryon, Turning Point)
- Could Monroe County be liable for not consistently enforcing its current rules?
- Volunteer labor could help prepare trails for use
- Other counties' parks allow bicycles (e.g. Genesee County Park)
- No new buildings would need to be built, nor new property acquired.
- Sensitive parks or parts of parks could remain off-limits
- Would we rather our kids ride in the street with traffic?
Why can't a bicycle be ridden in a Monroe County Park?
