N8I CXpedition...

What in the world is a CXpedtion?...

  • I will be the first to admit it... I'm trying to coin a new term. Most of you are probably used to hearing "DXpedition", which literaly means "Distant Expedition". In our case the destination isn't all that distant, practically in our back yard. So I came up with the term "CXpedition" for "Close Expedition." Though the destination is close at hand, nonetheless it is still an expedition. With such things as meetings, logistics for land and water transport, food, cooking, lodging, radio equipment, fuel, generators, permits, fees, web site, QSL Cards... and the list goes on. A lot of effort is going into this CXpedition. We hope you enjoy it! I know we will! -Jeff KCØMKS

Operation Information...

Dates and Times...

  • Details are on the "Operations" page...
  • Start: August 9, 2013 at 0000 UTC (1900 CDT)
  • End: August 11, 2013 at 2400 UTC (1900 CDT)
  • We plan to run 48 hours straight! The exception being weather related or some other unforeseen event such as a moose attack...
  • One of the boats will be running APRS! So look for N8I-9 on our trip out/back! When near Isle Royale, we will have to pull the plug...
  • Weather on Isle Royale will be a huge factor in our operations. We will need to navigate over 20 miles of open water to our destination. Wind alone may cause a delay in our departure or return. Our goal is to be on the water by noon on August 8. If weather is bad, we will delay departure by one day... but may be late getting on the air.
  • Time and weather permitting, we may initiate a secondary activation by lighting up the Menagerie Island Lighthouse! Also known as Isle Royale Lighthouse, this old beauty is known as ARLHS USA-407.

  • For more information about Isle Royale National Park, please see our "Links" page.
  • Due to the low impact nature of our visit, we have been asked to keep the exact location of our operations under cover. Please don't ask, because we cannot disclose our exact location!

Meeting...

June 24, 2013 at BDI in Duluth MN

  • Meeting called by team leader Doug AA0AW. Though we have been discussing this event for the past 9 months individually or small groups, this was the first "official" meeting of the full team. We hammered out who was in charge of what station, transportation, food, fuel, etc. Thank you to Dave KBØVDK for the use of BDI Duluth as a meeting location.
