Shanty Bay is about seven miles east of Barrie, Ontario, on Lake Simcoe. Her parents moved to Manitoulin Island in 1881 with the rest of their family, their livestock, and all of their worldly goods. They hired an Indian with his sailboat atMidland to take them to Silver Water, a three-day journey. They settled on the west side of Silver Lake.
