Center of Mass and the Second Condition of Equilibrium

Obj: Using three masses at various locations on a meter stick, calculate and test the center of mass and the Second Condition of Equilibrium.

We can assume the meter stick to be of uniform density.

Procedures

(DO NOT TEST YOUR SYSTEM UNTIL ALL CALCULATIONS ARE DONE)

1. Choose three masses and three locations along the meter stick that will satisfy the Second Condition of Equilibrium. You will need to show your calculations for proof. Use the 50 cm mark as the center of the system.

2. Repeat step 1 except calculate the center of mass of your system using a center at least 10 cm from the 50 cm mark. SHOW ALL WORK.

3. Now, bring your system to the AP Physics teacher, set the masses at their predetermined location, place the calculated center of mass on the fulcrum.

It Balances: +5

It doesn't Balance: Do Problem 48 on page 191.
