"Cinder Cone"
at Lassen Volcanic National Park

Family Reunion
August 1-3, 2003

 Local Attractions

I Have added this information for anyone who might want to make the Family Reunion part of a longer vacation in this area. Some of you will be coming a long way, and it might be nice to visit some of the sights since you have come so far. Perhaps visiting some of the local attractions, such Lassen Volcanic National Park, with other family might be a really nice thing to do!

Museums

Westwood Museum
311 Ash St. 96137
530/256-2233
The Red River Lumber Company, was once the largest pine lumber mill in the world and the main user of the rail-trail that now offers recreation to many(see BizzJohnson Trail). Stop in at the Westwood Museum to see photos of the company's mill, the town and the Fernley and Lassen Branch Railroad. Formed in 1914 to carry lumber from Westwood to the Southern Pacific main line at Fernley, Nevada, the Fernley and Lassen Railroad was the key transportation link that made the lumber company's mill in Westwood possible. The mill gradually declined and the railroad branch closed in 1956. Abandoned for 20 years, 25 miles of the railroad bed were then reborn as the Bizz Johnson Trail.  It's best to call to confirm hours of this all-volunteer museum.

A compact, century-old steam locomotive known as the "Dinky" is also on display on the Collins Pine Co. lawn along Main Street. The "Dinky" was recently discovered at the bottom of nearby Butt Valley Reservoir during repairs to the dam. It is believed to have been used to help build the dam about 1913.
