the FIRST AND THE LAST


"And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying unto me, "Fear not; I am the First and the Last. I am He that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and I have the keys of Hades and of death." (Revelation 1:17-18)

"And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; "These things says the First and The Last, who was dead, and is alive;..." (Revelation 2:8)

"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with Me, to give to every man according as his work has been. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the Tree of Life, and may enter in through the gates into the City." (Revelation 22:12-14)

First: from the Greek word protos which means: "first, before, principal, most important, chief."

Last: from the Greek word eschatos which means: "last, at the last, final, finally, till the end."

The same thing is said of God in the Old Testament:

"Thus says Jehovah (the LORD) the King of Israel, and his Redeemer Jehovah (the LORD) of Hosts; "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for Me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show unto them. Fear you not, neither be afraid; have not I told you from that time, and have declared it? You are even my witnesses. Is there a god beside Me? Yes, there is no other god; I know not any." (Isaiah 44:6-8)

"Hearken unto Me, O Jacob and Israel, My called; I am He; I am the first, I also am the last. My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has spanned the heavens, when I call unto them, they stand up together." (Isaiah 48:12-13)

When God calls Himself the First and the Last in Isaiah 44:6-8 He is speaking, within the context, of Himself being the one and only God in existence. He alone is the God of eternity past, who alone knows eternity's future! He is the First God in line and the Last God in line; and there are no other gods in between. There is only one God! And Jehovah is His name. Consider also these words of God:

"You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and My servant whom I have chosen; that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I Am He; before Me there was no god formed, neither shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside Me there is no Savior. I have declared, and have saved, and I have shown, when there was no strange god among you; therefore you are My witnesses, says the LORD, that I Am God. Isaiah 43:10-12

In Isaiah 43:10-12 God is speaking of Himself as not only being the one and only God, but also the one and only Savior in existence. He is the First in line and the Last in line; and there are no other saviors in between. There is only one Savior!

When God calls Himself the First and the Last in Isaiah 48:12-13 He is speaking, within the context, of Himself being the one and only Creator in existence. He is the First in line and the Last in line; and there are no other creator-gods in between.

When Jesus calls Himself the the First and the Last in the Revelation passages, He is quoting from the Isaiah verses in the same context as expressed by God in the Isaiah verses.

John, the apostle of Jesus, begins his Gospel declaring this essential truth concerning Jesus: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." John 1:1-5

The apostle Paul also declares this essential truth concerning Jesus: "Giving thanks unto the Father, who has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; and Who has delivered us from the power of darkness; and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son; in whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins; who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him. And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist." Colossians 1:13-17

But Jesus applies additional context to the meaning in regards to His human nature. He said, "I am the First and the Last. I am He that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore." (Revelation 1:17-18) Here Jesus speaks of being alive; and then of His dying on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins; and then of His resurrection from the dead back into life forevermore. Jesus is our Savior! He is the First Savior for sin in line and the Last Savior for sin in line; and there are no other saviors in between. There is only one everlasting Savior; and His name is Jesus!

Jesus is He who lives, and was dead, and who is alive for evermore ! Always and always, Forever and ever - Amen!

Jesus says:  “Behold, I am coming quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give to every man according to the work he has done. I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Frst and the Last.” (Revelation 22:12-13)

“Amen, Come Lord Jesus”

Father in Heaven, You are the one and only God in existence.
You are the First in line and the Last in line; and there are no other gods in between.
