BRIDEGROOM

"Then the disciples of John came to Him (JESUS), saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said unto them, "Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the Bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the Bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they shall fast." (Matthew 9:14-15)

Bridegroom: from the Greek word numphios which means: "a bridegroom, (literally or figuratively)" In Context Jesus id the Bridegroom; and the Church is the Bride.

Recomended reading prior to study: Matthew 9:14-17, John 3:22-36, Revelation 19:7-9, 21:1-27.

Speaking about Jesus,John the Baptist said this:

"Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purification. And they came unto John, and said unto him, 'Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom thou bore witness, behold, the same is baptizing, and all men are coming to Him.' John answered and said, 'A man can receive nothing, except it is given to him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before Him.' He (Jesus) who has the Bride is the Bridegroom: but the friend of the Bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices greatly because of the Bridegroom's voice; thus my joy is therefore fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He (Jesus) who came from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth: He who comes from heaven is above all." (John 3:25-31)

To Better understand this title of Jesus, it would help by understanding who the Bride is:

Bride: from the Greek word numphe which means: "a bride, a newly married wife, a young woman. (literally or figuratively)" In Context the Church is the Bride; and Jesus is the Bridegroom.

Now consuder these verses:

"Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him, for the Marriage of the Lamb (Jesus) has come, and His Wife (the Church) has made herself ready. And to her it was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white; for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints." (Revelation 19:7-8)

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a Bride adorned for her Husband (Jesus). And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And He who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new."” (Revelation 21:1-5)

"And there came unto me one of the seven angels who had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, 'Come nesr, and I will show you the Bride, the Lamb's (Jesus's) wife.' And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that Great City, the Holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God; and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; ... And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defiles, nor anything that works abomination, or makes a lie; but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life." (Revelation 21:9-11, 26-27)

First, the Bride is the the Church; the totality of all born-again Christians; all those who have been arrayed in fine linen, clean and white. The fine linen is the righteousness of all the saints, which they have received through the shed blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus the Christ! Second, the celestial Holy City, the New Jerusalem, is the dwelling place of the Bride of Christ; thus the Holy Jerusalem is also called the Bride, the Lamb's Wife. The "glory and honor of the nations" are all the saints from every nation upon the earth whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. There shall be rejoicing, and gladness; and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor tears, nor any more pain. And God Himself shall be with us (Emmanuel-God with us), and shall be our God, always and always! Amen and Amen!

But it will not so wonderful between the Brisegroon and others. Consider these verses:

“Then shall the Kingdom of Heaven be compared to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the Bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps, but took no extra oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels along with their lamps. While the Bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, 'Behold, the bridegroom (Jesus) is coming; go you out to meet Him.' Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, 'Give us of your oil; for our lamps have gone out.' But the wise answered, saying, 'Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go you rather to them who sell, and buy some for yourselves.' And while they went to buy, the Bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with Him to the marriage; and the door was shut. Afterwards came also the other virgins, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But He answered and said, 'Truely I say unto you, I do not know you!' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man shall come.” (Matthew 25: 1-13)

Let us therefore be likewise ready and wise; eagerly waiting for the coming of the Bridegroom, the Son of Man, our Lord and Savior Jesus!
