BREAD OF LIFE

"And Jesus said unto them, "I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to Me shall never hunger; and he who believes on Me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)

Bread: from the Greek word artos which means: bread, a loaf, loaves, food.

Life: from the Greek word zoe which means: Life; alive, or living; physical or spiritual.

This is the context in which Jesus made this statement:

"Then they said unto Him, "What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?" Jesus answered and said unto them, "This is the work of God, that you believe on Him (Jesus) whom He (the Father)has sent." They said therefore unto Him, "What sign do you show then, that we may see, and believe you? what work do you do? Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, "He gave them bread from heaven to eat.""

Then Jesus said unto them, "Truly, truly, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but My Father gives you the True Bread from heaven. For the Bread of God is He (Jesus) who comes down from heaven, and gives life unto the world."

Then said they unto Him, "Lord, forevermore give us this bread."

And Jesus said unto them, "I am the Bread of life; he who comes to Me shall never hunger; and he who believes on Me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, that you also have seen Me, and believe not. All who the Father gives Me shall come to Me; and he who comes to Me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. And this is the Father's will who has sent Me, that of all whom He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise them up again at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on Him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

The Jews then murmured at Him, because He said, I am the Bread which came down from heaven. And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that He says, "I came down from heaven?""

Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, "Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to Me, except the Father who has sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, "and they shall be all taught of God". Every man therefore who has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes unto Me. Not that any man has seen the Father, except He who is of God, He has seen the Father. Truly, truly, I say unto you, he who believes on Me has everlasting life. I am that Bread of Life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a man may eat of it, and not die. I am the Living Bread who came down from heaven; if any man eats of this Bread, he shall live forever; and the Bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. (John 6:28-51)

Jesus, of course, was not speaking of oven baked bread; or even miraculous food such as manna; or even the miraculous multiplying of bread used to feed the 5000 in the story just preceding His 'Bread of Life' discussion. Rather He was speaking of Himself as being the 'Bread of Life'. Consider these verses:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. …, And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-4, 14)

“Then Jesus said unto them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, dwells in Me, and I in him. As the living Father has sent Me, and I live by the Father: so he who eats Me, even he shall live by Me. This is that Bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he who eats of this Bread shall live for ever. These things He spoke in the synagogue, as He taught in Capernaum. Many therefore of His disciples, when they had heard this, said, 'This is an hard saying; who can hear it?' When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples murmured at it, He said unto them, 'Does this offend you? What then if you shall see the Son of Manascend up to where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives-life; the flesh profits nothing; the Words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:53-63)

Although Jesus was speaking metaphorically, He did make it clear that it is not His literal flesh and blood that He says we must eat; but rather the “Words” that He (the Word who is God) speaks to us. Finally consider these words of Jesus:

“But He (Jesus) answered and said, It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.' ” (Matthew 4:4) (quote from Deut. 8:3)
