Tennichibo Hosaku:

Suzuka-no Oniyuri (ogre lily at Suzuka): Tennichibo Hosaku.  Tennichibo, a character in kabuki, alludes to Tennichibo who actually existed.  Claiming himself as a bastard son of the noble eigth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, Tennichibo raised an immense disturbance in the feudal regime.  On the other hand, in the drama Azuma-kudarai Gojusantsugi (westbound trip covering 53 stages), performed by Ichikawa Kodanji IV at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tennichibo acts as a secret child of the warlord Kiso Yoshinaka and an intriguer who plots to seize the reins of the government.  The scene of Suzuka-yama Dammari (Pantomime at Mount Suzuka) in that drama is its popular climax in which a young bonze, Hosaku (renamed Tennichibo upon reaching manhood) meets up for the first time with his wicked partners Jirai Taro and Hitomaru Oruku.  Tennichibo in this particular scene appears wearing the mask of an oni (ogre); hence the title of this picture.
