  BOARD OF CHRISTIAN ACTION

Our Responsibilities:
We oversee the church’s financial commitment to our broader mission through Our Churches Wider Mission. We also oversee our financial donations to Genesee Valley Association and Spencerport Ecumenical Ministries. Our board is responsible for sending cards (birthday, sympathy, get well, etc.) to our members and provides plants for our special folks at Easter and Christmas. We support local outreach programs through financial support and volunteer workers.

Current Activities:
We have a group of volunteers who go to Salem Soup Kitchen once a month to help prepare and serve a meal, we coordinate our food drives to support our local food shelf and we are developing a calling/visitation committee to visit our special folks and members who are hospitalized.

The Board of Christian Action continues to send cards to shut-ins, those with special occasions and our “special folks.”  If you know of someone who would enjoy such a card, please contact Betty Anne Riley.

This has been a very active summer for the Board of Christian Action.  We have continued our outreach in many areas.

Joan Forth represents our church at the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf.  Joan reports that the Food Shelf had served approximately 40 families in the past five months.  This number is double to prior periods.  Joan reports an urgent need for several food items; JELLY, CANNED MEATS, CHILI, STEW, HASH, BOXED POTATOES, RICE, COOKIES, CRACKERS, MACARONI AND CHEESE AND TOOTHPASTE.    Please bring any of the above items to the Fellowship Hall and place them in the box marked for the Food Shelf.

Sally Lydick recruits people to go to Tops in Greece and pick up foods for the Salem Nutrition Center on the third Monday of the month.  Sally is in need of volunteers to help with this very important activity.  At present, Jim McAtee and Don Darrohn  are our only volunteers.  Speak to Sally if you can help.

Ginny Worden organizes volunteers to work at the Salem Nutrition Center on the third Monday of the month.  Candy and Russ Hurlbut, Ginny and Lyn Worden represented our church for September.

Louise Hunter delivered a “car load” of clothing to the Cameron Ministries.  The 20 bags of clothing were left over from the Rummage Sale.  Remember that you can place clothing items in the Cameron box in the Fellowship Hall at any time of the year.

Marty Sochia organized a group to work at Habitat for Humanity.  Look for Marty’s article in this newsletter.  He will be taking another group on NOVEMBER 19.  If you are interested, please contact Marty.

Betty Anne Riley continues to send cards to all of our special folks as well as those who are ill or experiencing special problems.  You can help by alerting Betty Anne to someone who needs a card.

If these activities sound interesting to you and you would like to be part of the Christian Action Board, we are looking for three new members!

Our contributions to the Neighbors in Need Offering support the United Church of Christ’s domestic ministries of justice and compassion.  One-third of the offering undergirds the work of the Council of American Indian Ministry.  The other two-thirds supports justice advocacy and direct service projects, including the United Church of Christ’s Hunger Action Ministry, poverty reduction efforts, just-peace programs and community grants.

Envelopes for contributions will be included in the bulletin on Sunday, October 2nd.  If you are unable to be in church that Sunday, additional envelopes will be available at the back of the sanctuary.

Meetings:
The board meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm, prior to the Council meetings and then attends the Council meetings at 7:30 pm. The current chairperson is Betty Anne Riley.
