While I was working on my Masters in Applied Mathematics at the University of Alabama, I made the Towers of Hanoi out of wood, with 5 rings each of a different type wood: Oak, Walnut, Poplar, Pine & Basswood. My step-grandkids have had a shot at them. This site lets you try your hand at moving any number of rings. JeDye’s secret to moving the rings
using the least number of moves: The lowest number of moves required using n rings is 2 raised to the nth power minus 1. i.e. 3 rings require 2 x 2 x 2 – 1 = 7 moves. You can’t do it in fewer moves. Think of the three towers as arranged in a circle and follow these rules: · Always move in the same direction – if the number of rings is odd, move clockwise and if even, move counter-clockwise. · Always place the disk on the next available tower in the direction you are moving. · Don’t move a ring twice (i.e. first to one tower, then to another). · Don’t try to put a larger ring on a smaller ring (it won’t let you). If you follow these rules, you cannot make a misstep. If you choose 7 rings, it will take you 2x2x2x2x2x2x2-1=127 moves. (Since 7 rings is an odd number, move the rings clockwise to the next tower.) |
