Additional Information:

Johan Jerstad tells the following about Tobias Ingvaldsen:

"Line Arstol told me that she and her parents were once in Kristiansand, [Norway] and planned on going to America. She was just a young girl at the time. They happened to meet Tobias there and went on-board his ship. He gave them a grand reception and they enjoyed great hospitality."

Records of seamen, their ships and voyages, were recorded in the "Seamen's Rolls." Often a ship would take cargo to one destination, pick up another cargo and take it somewhere else. At that place they might load another cargo and take it back to their home port. They tell the following of Tobias' career:

Brødrene* ? 11.02. 1874 Arrived at Shields, England Met with accident February, 1874 North Sea

* The name Brødrene means "two brothers." Most likely two brothers, who were in business together, owned this ship. According to the Lloyd's Registry of Ships, (from England) the Brødrene arrived at Shields, England on 11 February, 1874. However, Lloyd's Registry does not record any accident or wreck befalling Brødrene. According to the Seamen's Rolls from Stavanger, Skippar Ingvaldsen died as a result of a wreck in the North Sea during February, 1874. Johan Jerstad, in his historical chronicle of Fjotland parish, wrote that this wreck occurred 24 February, 1874. Oral family tradition says that the freight was millstones and that they were going to the USA. The North Sea is known as being one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world, especially during the winter months when the storms become particularly violent. His daughter Marie recalled that they waited and watched a long time for his ship to return to the harbor, but it never did. No additional information seems to have survived about Brødrene, or her wreck, at any archives in Norway, or England. Additionally, according to the Seamen's Rolls, only one other person, Helmik Syvertsen Heggen, age 23, is said to have lost his life aboard Brødrene during February, 1874. Parish records at this time did not record deaths at sea and there was no probate record entered for Tobias.
