The Ida County Conservation Board was created in 1960 by a vote of county residents. The Ida County Board of  Supervisors appointed the first five member board to oversee the development of the Ida County Conservation Board programs and projects.

Since that first meeting in August of 1960, the conservation board  has strived to preserve and manage some of the finest recreation and natural areas in western Iowa.
