Retired FCC official and IBS V.P. for Licensing and Regulatory Matters,  Allen Myers,  Robert Shotwell of Spectrum Investigative Services  and IBS C-O-O Fritz Kass will lead you through the maze of government regulation and answer your questions about licensing options, broadcast rules and dealing with the FCC and ABIP (Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program).

 Learn about the elements that make up a good promotion and the creative and organizational skills you need to help make your stationÕs image shine. As competition for audience grows, the need for exciting and effective promotions is growing as well. This panel will introduce you to promotional ideas and new ways you can Òget the word outÓ about your product. Lindsey Anderson, Promotions Director at WAAF, Boston  - Scott Gibbons, morning host, WPLM, Boston and Courtney Strakosch, Promotions & Sales at WHCN/WPOP, Hartford will lead this session of idea sharing, problem solving and creative thinking.

- Indecency/Obscenity * - Allen Myers - IBS Board and FCC (ret.) - Len Mailloux - IBS Chair/Simmons College Communications Faculty

 The number of complaints to the FCC regarding over-the-air content has been growing steadily in the last few years. Public and Legislative pressures are calling for crackdowns. New fine structures have been put into place in recent years by the Commission and the courts are battling over the "Fleeting Explitive" issue. Learn what the rules say about obscenity/indecency from FCC veteran, Allen Myers and veteran News Director and Professor Len Mailloux . The best way to stay inside the law is to know the law.

- Production Tips & Techniques - Larry Miller, All Independent Radio,  The New England Institute, Boston

 The most effective way to improve the overall sound of your station starts in the production department. Join veteran broadcaster Larry Miller of The New England Institute of Art and one of the founders of "Underground Radio" in America for a great discussion on the whole production process. Learn about effective promos, recording and editing technique, new elements to add to your station and much more.

Only a generation ago, the number of women working in the broadcast media was very small. To the benefit of the industry and the audience, women are now involved in every aspect of media from top management to the trenches. Join Mary Cardaras, veteran CNN Producer and now chair of the Digital Media department at The New England Institute of Art, Liz Solar, veteran Boston broadcast personality and national voice-over talent and Courtney Strakosch, Sales/Promotions,  WHCN/WPOP, Hartford,  for a discussion on the opportunities, problems and the future of women in the broadcast world.

Join us as IBS celebrates "Excellence in Broadcasting" by honoring some of those IBS member stations who do an exemplary job in station organization, operations and programming. These stations, based on a self-inspection, are honored with a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze Microphone Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. Be there to pick up your award and to cheer on the other winners!

- IBS/Backbone Student Radio Network and Remote Broadcast Workshop* - George Capalbo - Paul Kamp - Backbone Networks

 The IBS/Backbone Student Radio Network (IBS/SRN) is a growing collaborative of stations around the country that are joining to form the worldÕs first academic internet radio network. Backbone Networks, which handles the streaming and technical side of IBS/SRN will be on hand to demonstrate how easy it is to participate in and broadcast with the IBS SRN ÒRadio Station in a BoxÓ concept which will allow you to stream 24/7 with full remote capability. BackboneÕs George Capalbo and Paul Kamp will explain what's happening with the network and demonstrate how easy it is to do a remote stream from almost anywhere.

Perhaps the most confusing issue facing academic broadcasters over the last few years has been royalties for music streaming. IBS efforts in Washington to help secure a fair and equitable music royalty rate continue and IBS C-O-O Fritz Kass  and Walter McDonough, an attorney and expert on digit copyright law will have the latest on this sensitive and confusing subject. This session separates myth from fact in this ongoing battle. What do we owe? When do we owe it? Who should we pay? What are we likely to pay in the future? They will answer all of these questions and more.

 As the world of media moves to new technologies, the need for good voice-over artists is also growing. Commercials make up only a small part of the voice-over world. This session will answer your questions and give you ideas on how to position yourself for that most-important first job. Resumes, cover-letters, internships and good contact skills are all crucial to getting noticed Òout thereÓ. Let Shawn Novatt of WOR, Judy Garrick, Career Advisor in Broadcasting at The New England Institute of Art and Lindsey Anderson of BostonÕs WAAF Radio show you how to get your career started in the right direction.

- CNI - College Newsnet International* - Mary Cardaras, Director, CNI & The New England Inst. of Art, Boston - Judy Richland, Simmons College, CNI Advisory Board - Len Mailloux, Simmons College, CNI Advisory Board

 One of the biggest challenges facing Journalism and Modern Media students is getting noticed. CNI, College Newsnet International is a new initiative that brings student journalists from around the world together through the CNI website which will feature work being done by student journalists everywhere. CNI is free to join and participate in. Think of it as a Youtube for journalists.  CNI will feature print pieces, video/film/documentary, radio features, student news clips, photographs, magazine articles and more. Get noticed on a world scale. Learn how you can become part of "CNI - Students Making News"

- Backpack Journalism - A Hands-On Workshop -Mark Wood, Independent Film Producer, Webcaster 

The world of Journalism is changing at lightning speed. The way we gather and transmit information has been reinvented  in the digital age and now the traditional roles of journalism are being challenged by eager, new backpackers who are changing the face of news gathering and reporting. Join Independent Film Producer and Webcaster Mark Wood as you take to the streets of Boston to shoot, edit and post a short video.

- The Future of Music - WhatÕs happening in the world of music and music royalties? How has the onset of web streaming, satellite, I-Pod, file sharing and other technologies and practices affected the music world? What is the relationship between the music industry and the broadcaster and what is that relationship likely to be in the future? Get an inside look at the latest in the music industry with Walter McDonough, lawyer and founder of the Future of Music Coalition.

 

 

3:30 - Live Band - Performance to be broadcast on Simmons College Radio and WIBS

Join us on the 3rd floor terrace for a live performance of the Boston band, Northwest. Their music is drawing crowds on the club scene and features Simmons Graduate Brittany Miltenberger. The concert will be aired live on both Simmons College Radio and WIBS.

Wrap up the day with some live music and a chance to exchange contact information with participants from the other schools.
