BIRTH: 26 MAR 1610, Wiltshire, England, Son of Richard Hurlbut & Ann Bower.

DEATH: Wethersfield, Ct. Sept, 1689.

Descendents of Thomas Hurlbutt (Capt. George Hurlbut) fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and latter became George Washington's Bodyguard.  He was killed in battle and received one of the first medals for bravery of the Revolution. George Washington wrote a letter dated Dec 8, 1783, detailing the facts regarding his service and bravery. (Read more) scroll down to George Hurlbut. He was also a close friend of Nathan Hale. Lieutenant Thomas Hurlbut was born in England in 1610; immigrated to New England; was lieutenant of the first company that garrisoned the fort of Saybrook, Connecticut in 1639; was a member of the Assembly in Connecticut in 1640; was wounded in the Pequot War; was one of the first settlers in Weathersfield; was voted a tract of land in 1671 for his services in the Pequot War; died in Wethersfield c. 1672.

Nathaniel Settled in Washington, CT, but latter moved to Hannover, NH in 1783. Nathaniel was a farmer until his death in 1817.

 

Married:  Elizabeth Betty Taylor, daughter of Capt. John Taylor, pirate hunter for the British Crown. Nathaniel's son, Asher Hurlbutt was a  veteran of the Revolutionary War. Conn. Militia in Capt. Hinds' Company, and Col. Canfield's Regiment.

Eli Hurlbutt Jr, was a harness maker, moved to Groton, New Hampshire, where they resided for many years. In 1870, he moved to Glendale, Wisconsin with his wife and son, Julius Augustus and his wife to take up farming.

 

 

Married:  Margaret Sloan, (1795 - 1879 ) daughter of Sgt. Joseph Sloan,  a Revolutionary War Veteran from NH. Eli was a harness maker in Hanover, NH.

Married:  Ida Fowler (1862 -1902) and had 2 children: Laurel Julius Hurlbutt and Opal J Hurlbutt. Ida (Fowler) Hurlbutt was a school teacher in Elroy, WI and died at age 40. Eugene then married Neddie Barker. No children from that marriage. Eugene was a steam engine and boiler operator. He ran a thrasher in Elroy, WI before moving to Parrish where he worked as a boiler operator in Parrish, WI

Laurel J Hurlbutt, learned steam engines at a young age from his father Eugene. For years he ran a steam engine for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. After a short employment with Robbins Flooring as a steam engine operator, he went into the live bait business and retired in 1958.

 

Married:  Cornelia Amelse (1894 – 1988) from Harrison, WI and had 4 children, Robert Eugene, Wendell Nicholes, Eugene Laurel and Ronald Fredrick

Died at age 89. Buried in St..Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
